Introduction:
Whether it be in Europe, Asia, or Africa, the land around and in the Mediterranean has always been rich in civilization. The Ancient culture of the Minoans thrived in Crete. In the Maghrib, Phoenician settlers built the city of Carthage. There were also the Greeks, who built city-states not only in Greece, but in various other places in the Mediterranean. The Greeks, who gave off many important scientific, philosophical, and political innovations and ideas, are often considered to be the root of western civilization. Under Alexander's conquests, Classical western ideas spread eastward. Many important elements in Greek culture would later be used by the Romans, who built a significant empire that brought cultural unity to much of Europe, and established a basis for future western states. Enormous economical activity also extended outside of the Empire: into the East African coast, and most famously, eastward towards Parthia (Persia) and China on the Silk Road. The classical era ended definitively with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th Century AD.
