Probably everyone has heard of Atlantis and knows the basic story of it having been a large island civilisation in the Atlantic that sank in a cataclysmic convulsion "9000" years ago. This story comes from Plato's works 'Timaeus' and 'Critias'. It is said that perhaps more books have been written about Atlantis in the last 2500 years than any other excepting the Bible, and that Atlantis is rated as being among the biggest possible news stories that could break.
This ebook is about our theory that Atlantis island matches (South) America and Atlantis capital city matches Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku in Peru/Bolivia. How did we make our discovery? First we started with the whole world and narrowed down where Atlantis can and can't be going by the details in the Atlantis Account (size, direction, distance, etc) and general knowledge of world geography and history. We found that Atlantis could only be in the Americas. Then we searched all around the Americas for a location where the capital city could be going by the details in the Account (concentric city, plain, mountains, etc) and we found that it must be in South America not North America, and specifically in the Peru/Bolivia area. Then we searched all through Peru & Bolivia and all around lake Titicaca until we finally found that Atlantis city certainly seems to match Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku. At first we were reluctant to accept the seeming match but we were forced to accept that Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku matches Atlantis city because of the concentric rings, and the small hill in the centre, etc just like the Atlantis Account describes. For the sinking of Atlantis we considered all the possible scenarios and eventually narrowed it down to either continental shift or crust displacement / pole shift.
Before we get into the chapters giving detailed matches evidences, we will first post a shorter summary of the strong matches between Tiahuanaco and Atlantis capital city.
- Evidences that Tiahuanaco. "has all the features of harbour" and was a seaport, and that it was once connnected with the waters of lake Titicaca. The "candelabra" trident at Paracas may be a landmark for sailors coming to the port city of Atlantis. *
- Match in drawings of Tiahuanaco for they could sail right up to citadel/palace/temple in the central island of Atlantis.
- The area size of Tiahuanaco in some sources may match the 50 stades or 11 km or 9.2 km or 5.5 miles radius size of Atlantis city. (See list of various versions of Tiahuanaco's size in my ebook chapter on the city. Compare "scattered over a number of square miles", "much more extensive than previously thought covering and area of at least 650 hectares or 1675 acres".) The size of the central island of Atlantis (5 stades or half a mile) also maybe matches the size of central Tiahuanaco (3 mile width trough or 2 square km or 2 x 1 miles).
- The dates for Tiahuanaco of various sources (including 15000 bc, 1200 bc) agree with Atlantis' various dates of 9000 yrs or 900 yrs or 9000 months before Solon. Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku has been called "the cradle of American man" (refs Posnansky, Alford, Sitchin, Kolosimo). "I would say that I consider this the oldest antiquity in all of Peru." "... the most ancient place of any I have yet described." The Atlantis sinking event might possibly be linked with the "night without/withno sunrise/dawn for 20 hours" or 'chamak-pacha' "period of darkness" in the reign of 15th monarch of the ancient empire of 1650 or 1400/1394/1391 bc (matching Joshua's long day of ca 1393 bc).
- The Akapana matches the hill/mountain in middle of Atlantis city.
- There are at least one or two concentric rings in the ground at Tiahuanaco in archaeological drawings in Posnansky, Sitchin and Alford. Written descriptions of Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku also mention "Its ceremonial core was surrounded by a moat, and the earth and clay which had been excavated from the moat ...", "... the canals which surround the site ...", "the artificial canal (or moat) ... that surrounded the whole site". Tiahuanaco has been called the "American Stonehenge". "The elites of Tiwanaku lived inside four walls surrounded by a moat which was to create the image of a sacred island" or "holiest of shrines" (Tiahuanaco article). Palacio enclosed by double ring of earthworks (Tiahuanaco/Calasasaya)? Tiwanaku is also named Taypicala/Taypi-kala "stone/rock in the middle/centre", and is "considered the middle of [the(ir)] world" by locals. An inscription from Pumapunku (part of Tiahuanaco) shows the concentric circles. There are concentric circles symbols ("geometric .... circles and ovals") on the gateway of the sun at Tiahuanaco (in Posnansky's drawings). There are also concentric circles in quite a number of Peruvian inscriptions, pictures & sites confirming that the city was/is in the area. Some even have the Atlas pillar motif rising from the concentric circles city.
- The size of a couple of the buildings at Tiahuanaco match the size of staidum long and half a staidum wide temple of Poseidon and the marvelous size palace of Atlantis.
- The site has about the exact same distance from city to the sea/lake.
- Tiahuanaco is encompassed by a plain similar to the one of Atlantis, and in which plain are geoglyphs matching the channels & population of Atlantis. "the plain of Tiahuanaco". "... the valley or plateau on which Tiahuanaco is situated. Nowhere else all around the lake is there such a level plateau." "at the edge of a great plain basin". "The site of Tiwanaku lies in a broad plain in the rio Tiwanaku valley, one of several that cut back from the southern edge of lake Titicaca into the huge plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano."
- Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku was involved in a catastrophe which is described in very similar words to Atlantis' quake(s) & flood(s) and "sinking": "blocks tossed/scattered", cracked 'Gate(way) of the Sun', "broken megaliths", "an avalanche [or] flood of water, and a sudden upheaval of unknown nature", "... many more still lie buried in the ground under layers of sediment from ... flooding from Lake Titicaca." "There were two Tiahuanaco's, one the visible ruins, the other the subterranean and invisible." * Local Peruvian/Andean myth attests a flood called 'Unu Pachacuti' "water overturns land". Tiwanaku may be the lost underwater city of Wanaku allegedly in Huinaymarka the southern part of lake Titicaca, since the names are related and their locations are pretty close. Wanaku's description matches Atlantis as a "sunken"/"submerged" city. Huinaymarka means "eternal city" which is also suggestive of a match with Atlantis. (There is no trace of Wanaku underwater in Huinaymarka in satellite maps etc, which further supports it really being Tiahuanaco which was once a seaport and was connected with the waters of Titicaca.)
- Tiahuanaco is in the centre/midpoint of longest side of the island, on the sea/ocean side, towards the islands, near the sea.
- Tiahauanco is surrounded by mountains which are among the highest of the world.
- Tiahuanaco has matches for cisterns: Tiahuanaco is pointed out in a number of sources as having water cisterns/drains/pipes, and/or "elaborate drainage systems & conduits"
- Peru matches the described distance of Atlantis (despite critics claiming the distance is too far for the invasion (even though the invasion is implied to have been over time and space)). The Atlantis Account says that Atlantis was "at a distant point in the Atlantic", they were "unmixed with other mortal stock" (Crit 121), they were "invaders" (Tim 25d, compare modern alien space invaders), "in those parts of the world" (Critias 120e). Atlantis was beyond/before the pillars of Hercules (Timaeus 25a, Critias 114c). The Pillars of Hercules were the most distant point of the (Greek) (known) world. Diodorus Siculus says Atlantis was "out in deep off Libya a number of days sail to the west" or "many days sailing across the Atlantic". Atlantis was "at the ends of the earth", "remotest" (Dio Sic 3:56).
- The Atlas pillar motif is prominent in Andean art/architecture, and in some instances is even seen rising from the concentric circles city which is as good as having the name Atlantis in written words. Likewise the chakana stepped cross is somewhat similar to the Atlantis Cross.
- Blocks with nail holes & grooves may match orichalc sheets. Golden panels niche in Tiahuanaco?
- Matches for orichalc and other metals mining or smelting at or near Tiahuanaco. Sitchin in 'Lost Realms' gives evidences that Akapana/Tiahuanaco was a copper/bronze/tin mining/smelting centre (small green pebbles, retaining boulders/walls turned green). "Metalic objects especially copper & bronze at Tiawanaku". Ternary (copper/arsenic/nickel) bronze I-shaped cramps at Tiahuanaco. Described in another source as poured molten metal cramps at Tiahuanaco? Titicaca's name may be from Titi(kalla) "(stone/rock of) a metal -- either lead or tin" and/or may mean "tin/lead crag/rock". Tiwanaku/Wanaku may be related to Sumer-Akkadian Anaku "tin land".
- Other details about Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku also are suggestive: Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku has been called "the Baalbek of the New World" (refs Posnansky, Alford, Sitchin, Kolosimo). Tiahuanaco is significantly roughly-halfway between two of the highest/greatest mountain peaks of the Andes & (South) Americas (Illampu/Sorata and Illimani). "Nowhere else in the world, perhaps, can a panorama so diversified and grand be obtained from a single point of view."
- We considered many other locations all around the world none of them match. Going by all the details of the Atlantis Account (including direction, distance, etc) we found that Atlantis could only be in the Americas or the Armorica Plate. We searched all around the Americas and found no places that match all details of the Atlantis Account (such as surrounding highest mountains, large plain, concentric city, remains of civiisation, etc) except for the Peru/Bolivia area. We searched all through Peru, Bolivia, the Atliplano, and Lake Titicaca and the only quality match is Tiahuanaco.
- The Inca Picture from the Coricancha depicts a number of things matching details in the Atlantis Account including the large rectangular plain with surrounding ditch and criss-crossing channels, the concentric circles city, the 2 crops a year.
* And there are quality evidences that the Andes were suddenly quickly raised higher within the lifetime of ancient humans and civilisation, not slowly over millenia, including the "saltwater Titicaca contains known sea life", the "old water lines of lake Titicaca are slanted", evidences that Tiahuanaco was once a seaport, etc.
(Our Tiahuanaco references include: quotes/excerpts from Posnansky (in Sithcin, Alford, etc). Sitchin's Lost Realms chapter on Tiahuanaco.* Alford's Gods of the New Millenium section of Tiahuanaco.* Daniken's In Search of Ancient Gods. Fasold's Discovery of Noah's Ark (part on Tiahuanaco). Jim Allen's Atlantis in Bolivia website. Bellamy's Atlantis Myth. Syke's Whos Who in Non-Classical mythology entry on Tiahuanaco. Wikipedia article on Atlantis. Readers Digest's Vanished Civilisations. Larouse World Mythology chapter on Peruvian/Andean mythology. Atlantipedia articles on Tiwanaku etc. The Inca Picture from the Coriancha. Kolosimo's Timeless Earth. Hancock. Lissner's Living Past. Velikovsky's Earth in Upheaval. And plenty of other online and offline sources too. If my own articles are not readable/uderstandable enough then some of these sources (esp the asterisked ones) give excellent information which should somewhat convince people (even though the authors themselves didn't actually realise Tiahuanaco matches Atlantis city). (Don't just trash ones like Sitchin and Daniken as unreliable or crackpot. Despite their questionable theories the sources contain quality facts information on Tiahuanaco and other sites and things.))
(We sent this to Atlantipedia's editor Tony but he is constantly pretty against considering Tiahuanaco as Atlantis capital city and against other suggestions of mine.)
