Hmm, I think that would depend on whether they have German, Italian, mexican et al ancestry!

Politically I voted Japan, although I agree with the whole german thing, a lot of americans have german ancestry. (Heck, I am descended from German-speaking Americans.)  however it's not so much spoken aloud politically, but then again they did intern japanese during wwII and not germans.

I know there are quite a lot of Italians in the U.S. population as well. So I voted that.

I guess I'll go with Italian only because my last name is Italian. But I consider myself American and feel more related to our brother of the North, Canada.

From this list I would have to go with the Germans. Germans were put in internment camps just not on the level that the Japanese were. Are Americans really that close with France?

There are the French in New England who came from Montreal, my mother's side is one of those. There is also the French in New Orleans, the Cajuns.

Ancestry doesn't indicate closeness. I took the question to be political not ancestral. You seem to be taking it ancestrally. Some have stated a political closeness to France I don't think that the US is closer (politically) to France than Germany

I voted France, so many similarities between two states. That is also probably the reason the two hate eachother so much.

It's based on the US census, I don't see why the census should give fake statistics. How do you think that map should look like then?

It was a pretty vague question. Like I said earlier though I'd choose Canada, and only chose Italian and maybe French because of ancestry. I didn't really think much politically, I personally don't feel close to any country due to political reasons.

I voted Japan. Right now the US is a sponge for Japanese culture, especially at the lower ages.

I seriously believe that it isn't in the spirit of this thread for non-Americans to vote in this pole.

I voted for German culture because the American experience with Germany isn't modern germany but rather the historical fantasy of "The Fatherland." This isn't a unique american phenomenon, turn of the century British thought of themselves as german cousins (perhaps because of the royal family, for which that applied literally) and as such espoused such noble qualities to the german people that americans likewise copied. It stuck more in america since they didn't suffer through two world wars and it had a larger german population.

Then again my experience could be more of a local one, I mean if you heard some conversations I've had with people around here you'd think we we're all Rommel Nazis*

*Along the lines of "You know Hitler wouldn't be so bad if he didn't start killing Jews." -Actually line I heard once.

Actually that map is 100% accurate Top Gun, remember though it's most ancestry so that means that they majority of those counties are more like 20-30% of that nationality than 70-80% of it.

I may not be an U.S. citizen but you should remember that AMERICA is the name that was given to SOUTH AMERICA LOLLOL

And remember that your ancestors came to the Americas after everyone else Big%20smile

(just pulling legs, of course)

By the way, there are quite a lot of German descendents in South America as well.

Yeah but we're all from Africa anyway so in the end location matters for nothing.

I say Japan. As someone said before, America is a sponge for Japanese culture right now.

On the other hand, the countries of Germany and France are not highly thought of in America. Using French or German as an adjective typically means two things: One,  it is fancy or expensive. Two, it is submissive or sissy-ish.

Can you explain that to me? I don't see a lot of Chinese culture just a lot of Chinese. I live in Toronto to which is one of the most mixed cultured cities in the world.

Actualy Americans in the main are unfortunately aren't interested in anything related to the premise this thread has developed into imo. That is to say the 'joe' on the street 8-5 busting his butt to make a living and pay his bills. And if the choices reflected above represent anything it's the more educated and or simply inquisitive individual who would broaden his or her academic horizones imo.

Because in the end to those people, it's more then just cheap cars or even loss of jobs thru offshore movement and or working in the same as middle level management. Or trade bases and baseline economics and international realpolitik. It indeed might even be ethnicaly related as an immigrant loves his past yet loves his new country etc.  Or it might be all of those things i just cited; because of the individual impact felt and percieved by whomever you query. I for example didnt even vote because Britain wasn't on the list and that would have been my personal choice.

I voted for the germans, I look at the french as more of a big brother type, constant arguing between siblings, with germany as one of the parents.  Of course in Minnesota it seems like 90% of the population has scandinavian or german ancestry.  Nothing but blonde hair and blue eyes.Smile

Yeah, it also does depend on where your from. In Southern New England it's mostly Italian, Irish, French Canadian, and Hispanic background(mostly Peurto Rican I believe). Which is why I chose Italian.
