The First Balkan War was the only time in history that Greece and Bulgaria were not enemies.... During the Byzantine Empire, the Second Balkan War and WWW 1 & 2, Greece and Bulgaria were on the opposite camps!

“Caught in the middle”, faced with new division lines amid celebrations of the First Balkan War. That’s how Bulgarian Muslims say they feel. 100 years later - some say this was “liberation”, while others insist it was “ethnic cleansing”

I have this two photos, from the Balkan Wars era. My great-grandfather (in the first photo, the first from the right), fought voluntarily in the battles of Kilkis-Lahana (19 to 21 June 1913), Kresna-Gorge (July 1913) and in the Epirus front, in the battle of Aetorahi (end of 1912 to early 1913). He was a simple corporal and was decorated with the greek-turkish medal and the greek-bulgarian medal.

Can anyone tell me (seeing the photos) in which unit  or regiment was he, or even were the photos were taken? Anything, would be very helpful and valuable.

Usually through the insert image function found in the Icon line above the posting space. However there appears to be a problem with it currently. It is being examined. Until then the only option is to insert a link with the photo. However before you do that you must receive permission first. To do that, you need to PM either the admin owner or a staff. To PM usually requires you to post approx ten posts prior to the function being activated.
These are safeguards to avoid spam bots.

Thanks and welcome to the forum.

A few days ago a watch  "Zorba the Greek". It was a old fashion movie for me. I had known that it was great movie for own times, but my opinion was why I should have watch it. However, all is gone after I watched it. Yes, it had bad effects like in course scenes, but the character of Zorba, english man and french lady, are excellent. The movie is about Greek writer Nikos Kazancakis' novel and it was directed by Michael Cacoyannis

The Zorba is a regretful person who is in late middle-aged. He probably fought in Balkan Wars (the story is in 1930's)

Originally posted by

Zorba describes his ambush of a rival guerrilla, a Bulgarian priest:

So I went into this priest’s stable and waited. Toward nightfall the priest came into the stable to feed the animals. I threw myself on him and cut his throat like a sheep. I lopped off his ears and stuck them in my pocket. I was making a collection of Bulgar ears, you see; so I took the priest’s ears and made off.

A few days leter, Zorba repented of this action and renounced his country, after meeting the five orphaned children of the priest he had killed, who had been reduced to beggary. But this was only after having already carried out a whole series of atrocities:

I’ve done things for my country that would make your hair stand on end, boss. I’ve cut people’s throats, burned villages, robbed and raped women, wiped out entire families. Why ? Because they were Bulgars, or Turks.

Yes, I know a little bit Turkish as much as ordinary Turk in Turkish. It is my mother tongue and I am living in Turkey Big smile. Sorry, but I couldn't see any wrong thing in my cartoons. Those are historical references of how the people in West seemed Ottoman in those days.

he is asking what did madanaywe mean in his last sentence. He means that Balkans are still dividing by strange powers as like in Ottoman times. A tailor is shaping Balkans as his wishes.

Guys, lets take this to the native language section, or have Sam post in English.

My great-grandfather fought in the Balkan Wars and won two medals:the Greek-Turkish Medal, for the FBW and the Greek-Bulgarian Medal for the SBW. I have a pocketknife, with king Constantine and queen Sophia, probably a souvenir. I also have an ivory brooch of that era, probably a souvenir also, with king Constantine. I wonder if anyone knows anything more about those souvenirs.

Balkanization
is still continuing. When Bulgarians, Greeks and Turks look their history, they are just seeing their own pain or victory. Even Balkan countries couldn't memorialize the begining of war. Each country tries to proof just own civil casualties (like just they suffered)

Muslims were the biggist looser of this war.

I'm agree that Balkan states oppositely to most of  great powers won great victory. What about the stupid mistake which Fendinant did? So inspired from recent victories without any political  perspicacity he wanted to make Serbians more accommodating. This part always made me angry!!! That would changed much recent history of Balkans..Anyway my grand grandfather also participated in the war. He was of front around Solun /Thessaloniki/
Let all from all sides rest in  peace!!!
Everybody listen only this which understands.
