Topic: Rome: Total War mod Total Realism 6.0 Preview Posted: 01-Oct-2005 at 00:15 |
I see, I see. The Macedonians are a pretty good faction. They are pwned by Rome though.

Well yeah, but Rome is boring, its all 'lets steamroll them with our
uber-infantry'. The Macas have that little extra native variety.

Rome is overpowered in Rome: Total War after Marius's reforms. That's a fact.
As for the use of Macedonian troops, I do like the idea of just
presenting a wall of spears and charging at the enemy. Do you march
your troops at the oblique? I usually do, with the right flank, being
my better troops, leading.
If you're rich as the Macedonians, go conquer Thrace. They don't make much money.
As for the Sarmatae, you rarely need to hunt down rebels for some
reason. I've found I run into more at Germania and Italy than any other
place. Of course, that could just be because of the massive amount of
cash I had when I ruled them both, and I pretty much left Gaul alone
when I played as the Gauls.
Do you play 6.1? I love the new German units. Every single one has a javelin attack.

The Romans aren't overpowered after MArius. In fact, I lost more battles with the Marius units.
Now, were can I get the mod? Is it in one of these many pageS?

The website is my homepage, but here's a link right to the download stuff:
http://www.rometotalrealism.org/download.html
And here's a link to the forums if you need installation help or something:
http://www.rometotalrealism.org/download.html
Or you could just PM me, Abyssmal Fiend there, too. ^_^
R:TR has an easy installing process, but I'll dig up the 6.1 German Hotfix for you:
http://forums.rometotalrealism.org//index.php?showtopic=82 30
The file was uploaded by Dark, who posted right after the topic was
made. It's at the bottom of his post, and he gives you instructions on
how to install it.
Enjoy.

I have been playing as the Romans and I do say, they kick arse. I have
conquered Illyricum, most of Gaul, Greece, most of Macedon, and all of
Sicily and I am in 267 B.C.

The AI's stupidity i'd noticed in the actual battle along with its
predictability, but on the strategy map it appeares to have an ounce of
brains, even laying ambush once in a while.
But today i have to re-evaluate that assumption.
So, there i am with a 500ish army, and it attacks me with 3 seperate armies, each with a faction menber as general.
So you'd think, not one, not two, but three armies, each with a good general, not a bad idea, but, bare with me here.
Army number one consists of the general unit (+8 bobyguards), and, umm, nothing.
Army number two consists of a general unit (+10 body guards), and, well, nothing.
Army numbter three whoever, is different, it consists of a general (+7
bodyguards), and a badly depleted unit of hoplites (about 30).
So not only is it attacking a single 500 stack with a small army, it does so with severly divided forces.
Needless to say, they made good archery practice. Losing three family
members in one battle, now thats gotta hurt ones sense of pride.

It's not that the AI is stupid, it's that it doesn't know how to plan
battles. Everything else comes down to the units it uses -- it just
charges at you.
Although Generals are not to be underestimated in any way, unless
you're fighting Greeco-Roman generals. The Armenian General Cataphracts
are brutal.

Will the patch work if I don't delete the game and reinstal? I really don't feel like deleting my current game for this if that is the case.

If you have the unaltered vanilla version yes. Just update the game with the official 1.2 patch, then install RTR.

Nvm, I got rid of it. But I have one question; why didn't it work. When I started my campaign, it simply quit without any message.
And I did not know it got rid of the historical battles and changed the beginning. I personally did not like it.

Just tried the Samaratans, damn, the noble archers are 20 each to maintain, and the horse archers 30.
Huge archer armies galore, whats the catch?
Are they the same in 6.1?

No, that has been corrected in 6.1.
There has always been a fix on the mainsite for 6.0 if you want. I manually neutered them myself to keep them from going all golden horde on me.

I heard of one guy who was playing as Rome, and the Sarmatians had all
of Germania and had 5 whole stack armies ready to attack him!
