Wheyhey! Just worked out how to post pictures from my desktop onto this forum.

 

All I have to do now is leave the backwindow open and an "On Holiday" notice on the front door, and wait......

I could become the first person to use one on another human in almost half a millenia. Great headline too, "Aztec slays burglar."

   

Think I'll go to Spain on my hols next year..... I'll even get it onto the plane through the metal detector...

..........Along with that Obsidiean knife I made specially to hijack the plane with.

Yup! All me own work, it's based on the one below from the Royal Armoury in Madrid, the only Macuahuitl to survive the conquest.

When I get me digital camera back I'll post some pics of my Tepoztopilli and Mixtec Sabre. Currently I'm about half way through making a huge double handed Macuahuitl.

You should apply for a job at the National History and Antropology museum in Mexico City.

Only one observation. I completelly admire your work. However, I noted the lace on the hand grip is missing.

The lace was fixed to the wristle to improve the handling.

Unfortuanately Mexican lace isn't exactly available at the local convenience shop in the Uk, but I continually upgrading my supplies of authentic material and increasing my knowledge of authentic methods of manufacture. Often with the latter more from personal experience than reading. It's amazing how much speculation by historians in their books has proven wrong and small insights into production and fighting I've gained by making some. Still I've only been doing it for a year, it's early days yet.

How long is it?

81.5 cm. - Blade section 56cm, Handle 22cm, Pommel 3.5cm

Side one 15 blades, Edge Length 47cm. Side two 14 blades, Edge Length 48cm.


How much does it weigh?

350g (approx)


How long did it take you to make one, once you had the materials?

A week working sporadically.

Could be done 2 hours for knapping the blades and 4+ hours for carving the wood.

Where's the center of gravity?

32cm from the tip.


Is it easy to use?

It very light and easy to swing, a straight blade so difficult to cut with and not at all sleek so awkward to stylishly fence with.


Please share your insights into fighting with it.

It would be a severe disadvantage against a sleeker Spanish sword. It's tip heavy, cutting swords are made tip heavy and fencing swords more evenly balanced. It's also more durable than you would imagine and could survive repeated impacts on an opponents shield. I'd invisage Aztecs fights were brutal dark age Europe style battering and bludgeoning matches.

Also, what kind of research you did to replicate the weapon? Besides that image, what other sources you used?

Aztec painted codices, Archaeological dig reports, contemporary accounts by conquistadores, Hoffman plates and several modern writers.

Finally, when will the website on the making of it be up

I've made a replica of a Japanese konsaibo war-club, as well as Crusader war-clubs inspired by those shown in the Maciejowski Bible--but I've never attempted anything as ambitious as your maquahuitl.
