It is now official: Greece will buy 415 BMP-3 vehicles. Greece will also receive 35-50 BMP-3F for the marines with no cost. Source: http://www.defencenet.gr

Here [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dts580XDvvQ] you can see BMP-3 in greek service in Cyprus (with the greek-cypriot National Guard). The video demonstrates clearly the way that the troops exit the vehicle, considered one of the biggest problems of the vehicle.

Greece made good move,we will get 450 BMP-3 greek version similar to
BMP- 3M for 1.2 billions.Completly different from BMP-3 that Cyprus has.
For the same money we would gotten less then 200 pumas.

It seems that the guys from hellenicdefence.gr were very dissapointed (something obvious from the pages of the magazine as well). Even the pro-russian site defencenet.gr admits it was clearly a political choice, and not an operational one (-chosen by the army I mean).
It's true however that the cost is significantly low, and the BMP-3 was propably the best choice to cover the needs of the greek army in quantity, after the used Marder A3 programme collapsed.
The version that serves in Cyprus is the original, and I doubt it has any great differences from the BMP-3M, appart from being slightly weaker in protection amd horsepower.
I think that the BMP-3 is (or should be) an interim measure, until the Puma becomes available/purchaceable by Greece. The BMP-3 is excellent for the islands, and it is the best replacement possible for the aged BMP-1s.
About the tank ammo, all I'll say is it was about time, especially now that the LeoA6 entered service (a month or so ago).

Some info coming out by reliable sources in Greece.
It looks like its going to be BMP-3GR
Artical translated
"According to the latest information we have, ultimately the formation of VMR-3 for which is expected to sign an agreement would be excellent. Specifically, as we said, will never be the BMP-3M, but it really has a lot of elements, to the point where it is considered almost more than the basic version VMR-3M. The tower will be incorporated is the VMR-3M of KVR. The inside will not be fully formed on the basis of the Greek requirements and specifications (high). The system Shtora-1 will not be included."
If we would have chosen the Puma it would have cost us 3.5 billion euros

The Puma will however be much better than the BMP-3.

By the way, is the article implying that the BMP-3GR will be weaker than the BMP-3 ("almost more than the basic version VMR-3M")?

Well, I think we all got that, but how good will the 'a la grec' version be? Judging by the increased cost, and by the greek army's basic standards and requirements, one would think that it would be a stronger than normal BMP-3M. I think we'll have to wait and see. Btw, what was the source of the article you included in your post?
