Grey Wolf - largest wild dog. It would win hands down.

Reader's Digest (old 70s issue I think) had a real life story on a plane crash on an ice shelf north of Siberia.
It happended that the pilot survived the crash but was trapped on the ice with a Siberian tiger, later a polar bear came on, & the big cat & bear got into a colossal fight. The bear was killed & both man & cat survived on bear meat, until the ice drifted close to land. The man was saved while the cat disappeared into Siberia.
So Siberian Tiger 1, Polar Bear 0

Siberian Tiger. Bigger, stronger, more resilient, deadlier weapons, more at home in the water, takes down larger prey (always a good indicator of the nastier opponent.) How about... Gorilla vs. Orangutan?

A Siberian Tiger would have no problem against a Leopard. And a Gorilla would certainly beat an Orang - possibly even a female Gorilla. However one blow from a male Orang could be lethal because they are so incredibly strong. I have been in the situation where 8 people were needed to make a fair tug of war game against Jantan, a male Orang at the zoo.

I thought orangs and gorillas were pretty similar in terms of size and strength. How can you be so sure of the victor? Also, do you work AT the zoo or something? you seem to have a very large amount of unusually detailed zoo-related knowledge.

Yes I have worked at Taronga Zoo in Sydney for the past 4 years, part-time. I love it!
There is a definite disparity the size between Orangs and Gorillas. Male Western and Eastern Lowland Gorillas can weigh over the twice the amount of a male Orangutan. I think this is enough of an advantage in a fight. Unless you think other factors would nullify the gorillas size advantage?

Well, I stand corrected then.
It's fairly hard to come up with a really interesting Animal v. Animal matchup for some reason...
African wild dog vs. Dingo, maybe?

Yes I know what you mean - they are sometimes too hypothetical to actually discuss. In fact, that's the case with pretty much all of these comparisons. They are just for our amusement Oh and I'd say the African Wild Dog. They are about the same size but the Wild Dog may have a very slight size advantage.

Goblin shark vs. Humboldt SquidSquid's more maneuverable, but smaller and weaker. My money's on it, since it could just latch on to the back of the shark and keep tearing.

I actually think the Goblin Shark stands a better chance. Yes, its bite radius is fairly poor, but it is 7 times the size of the squid and that must count for a bit. Squid have very soft 'skin' also, and one bite would be fatal for it, whereas the shark's skin is tougher.

As with most combats, it depends on who attacks first...ah Sun Tzu, rapidity truly is the essence of war.
Octopusses (actually the correct plural term...) have occasionally taken out sharks that were larger than them...although it took a while, and I don't imagine it's common in any way, shape, or form. But you are right that, by and large, a goblin shark's somewhat nastier than a Rojo Diablo.
Maybe upgrade the squid-number to two?

Assuming the squid could cooperate, it evens things out - maybe a slight advantage to the squid.

How about.....
A three-way duel between an African Buffalo, a wild American Bison, and my favourite - the extinct Aurochs...?
They seem surprisingly evenly matched..

I don't like this type of versus but, i think a good comparation can be between
Leopard
vs
Jaguar
Have you noted how many animals show these new-old world differences? The animals from the New World seem to be more robusts, and those from the Old more gracile
Anaconda vs Phyton
Eurasian wolf vs Mackenzie Wolf
Eurasian Brown Bear vs Grizzly
Eurasian Lynx vs Canadian Lynx
Crocodile vs Aligator

Dolphin: The Aurochs has size on its side, does it not? Horn size would be close between it and a bull African Buffalo...I'd go with the Aurochs.
Ikki: Jaguar would win - it has the mass and strength advantage over the Leopard.
Just my thoughts...

@Knights
The size of the aurochs is a bit of a misconception, they were typically as large as a large bull would be today, but in terms of overall size, they are broadly comparable to the water buffalo. Methinks the aggression of the African water buffalo might swing it, because they are untamable and are potentially much quicker and more aggressive. But the aurochs is still my fav, mainly because it has such a cool name.

Haha I agree. Though a distinction must be made between the 'Water Buffalo', which is a south/south east asian bovine, and the Cape Buffalo, which is the African one. I think the Water Buffalo is slightly larger, and typically has longer horns. Cape Buffalo: Water Buffalo: It would be interesting to throw the largest wild cow into the mix - the Gaur.
