I think there are enough evidences which show after the death of Cyaxares, Nebuchadnezzar II attacked and conquered Media, Persian mytho-historical sources talk about this event, there is also a Jewish source which confirms it, the Babylonian king who is called Aždahaka (Zahhak) in the Persian mytho-historical sources, is identified as Astyages in Armenian sources too. -------------

Interesting. Would be good to see the 3 sources. The Jewish one would be Judith 1 in the Apocrypha which has Nebuchadnezzar beating Arphaxad king of Media (and Arioch king of Elam). (Jewish sources also have Ahikar said to be a combination of Nebuchadnezzar and Ahasuerus.) Movses Khorenatsi, a 5th-century Armenian historian, says that the actual name of Astyages is Azhdahak which means "dragon", in the Middle Persian sources such as Bundahishn and Denkard, Azhdahak also means dragon and he is the king of Babel (Babylon). The name of Arpaksad in the Jewish sources is similar to Harpagus, the Median general who helped Cyrus the Great, some Iranologists believe that Fereydun in Shahnameh is actually Cyrus the Great and Kaveh is Harpagus, Azhdahak (Zahhak) was a cannibal, what he did against the son of Kaveh is similar to what Astyages did against the son of Harpagus.

Feridun/Fereydun/Thraetona is probably long before Cyrus' time, he has possible matches in other Indo-European mythology (Triton? Frey? etc.) I have sometimes thought that Azhi-Dahaka might be Melchizedek, or Lugalzaggesi, or some others. Some sources say he was (Arabian) king of Jerusalem, others of Babylon. They say Azhi matches Ahi in Indian (which they say matches Ophis or Echidna in Greek)? About Fereydun, I believe it doesn't relate to Thraeton, I see no
reason that "th" is changed to anything other than "h" in Middle
Persian, Fereydun seems to be related to Faridan/Fereydun-shahr, a
region in the west of Isfahan, the same land which was known as Partakka
in Assyrian, Paraitakene in Greek and Paraetacene in Latin sources,
some Iranologists say that Uppis, king of Partakka, in the Assyrian
sources, is Kay-Pisin of Kayanian dynasty. In fact Fereydun is the name of the first Persian kingdom.
