<span style=": rgb235, 233, 227; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px;">This cutlass with brass hilt and folding guard, featuring flintlock pistols on either side of the blade, was a combination weapon well suited for a privateer’s hand-to-hand combat. The sword grip is leather, with the date “1796” engraved on the back strap. After both barrels were fired, the cutlass could be used. |

The lock and folding trigger are probably from a pocket "muff pistol," but the barrel could have come from a Queen Anne.

Judging by the engraving, the owner must have been very wealthy. Were these pistol spears actually used for hunting, or were they more of a curio?

Haven't been able to find out if they were actually used for hunting, but my guess is they were both made for wealthy clients, with the more ornate one for a more wealthy client than the other. The top one is a double barrelled boar spear, made by Peter Peck of Munich in 1500, and the one below is by Ranseur of southern Germany, and is of a similar design, and was made in 1560.

Here we have a German flintlock sword pistol, by Schumann, A Linz, circa 1730-1750.

Alani, i once saw a similar weapon in an old militaria catalog. The lock may well have come from a European gun, but the blade and barrel were hand-forged. From what i remember reading, the Dha was a Burmese copy of the Chinese Dao sword and had a long grip so it could be wielded double-handed

It looks as if it might be a working model, Nick. What do you know of it?

Gunblades were still in use during WWI. This Webley knife pistol was an option for British officers http://hellinahandbasket.net/?p=4828

Cool. I've seen a similar Burmese weapon where the barrel of a carbine serves as the handle of a sword blade concealed in the stock
