Among the weirdest weapons of the Renaissance are the swords, axes, maces and even shields with built-in pistols. This particular example, a morning star and three-bareled pistol, is known as Henry VIII's Walking Staff. At night the king would walk through London to check up on the city's watchmen. Once one of them arrested Henry, much to the king's amusement

I thought the first revolver was invented in the 19th century?

The Germans were making primitive http://www.allempires.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=30125 - flintlock revolvers since the 1580s. However, being expensive and prone to chainfires, they never caught on until the 1820s

Belgian knife pistol used in the Crimean War and Franco-Prussian War by French officers. The pinfire cartridges were a big improvement over the old-style cap and ball revolvers

The blade of this halberd conceals a wheel-lock musket barrel. After putting a bullet into the enemy, you could close in for the kill without having to change weapons

The Belgian revolver i posted looks almost identical to Squall's gun. Here's another version with a longer blade:

It's a long time since i've played FF, but i remember Squall Leonhart and his duel with Seifer. Coincidentally, i found this photo of a pistol bayonet remarkably similar to Seifer's weapon

The broken blade of an old Napoleonic cavalry sabre has been grafted onto this pepperbox revolver. Its owner was probably a hunter rather than a soldier as swords of this length were used for clearing foliage and fending off wild beasts

Those babies look like they've seen some action, don't they? Yes, the Elgin cutlass was commissioned in 1838, and is said to have been the only combination weapon of its sort to have been so commissioned officially by the military, anywhere in the world. Only a hundred and fifty of them were made.

Perhaps the maker of this gun was an apprentice of Tornier, or a rival gunsmith trying to copy his work?

I think I saw one piece by Tornier about one hundred and thirty years previous. Now unless I'm wrong on the date then potentially it could be an apprentice somewhere down the line, or even maybe a rival of theirs at that time. Still it would be interesting to find out who it was made by.

Sounds about right. Tornier was active in the 1600s, so unless the gunstock was a reworked earlier piece, it was probably made by a gunsmith imitating the masterpieces of the older generation (possibly for the eastern market where the plain French gunstocks had not yet come into fashion)

Mallorean Arms BladeGun
The BladeGun is a semi-automatic heavy pistol with a large crescent shaped knife-blade attached in front of the trigger guard and grip. Also called the Samurai handgun, it incorporates styling found on the grips of katanas and Japanese kanji down the side of the slide and blade.

a big pocket knife with a 5½"  folding blade which folds out after pulling a screw in front under the barrels. Two separate 5½" barrels for caliber .48 percussion, smoothbores. Cockig the hammer causes the folding trigger / corkscrew to drop out of the frame. The percussion hammer are protective shaped to avoid a spark jumping to the other cap. The metal parts are kept in the white showing reasonable patina, the scales are very fine stag horn. The pistol is made during the 1850 -1860 period, shows no makers name or proof stamp, probably German hunting utensil. In good working order and excellent condition

Hunting scene on cap
A Pistol Sword

"DESCRIPTION: This is an utterly magnificent example of this combination weapon, a true museum piece in every sense of the word.  A pistol sword essentially is a sword with a pistol attached usually alongside of the blade. It differs from a rifle with bayonet in that the weapon is designed primarily as a sword and the firearm component is typically considered a secondary weapon, designed to be an addition to the blade rather than the sword being a secondary addition to the pistol. In addition, the two components of the weapons typically cannot be separated, unlike most bayonet fixed rifles. Historically, some early flintlock pistols were constructed as gun-swords with the barrel of the pistol attached to the side of the blade of a short sword or dagger. A shell guard protected the firing mechanism when it was employed in battle or in the hunt. These combination weapons were used by German and French hunters to kill wounded wild boar.  Examples of these hunting weapons can be found in the armory of Wawel Castle at Krakow, Poland and several great ones can be see at the Jagdmuseum in Munich. Their collection is the best. Hunting with this type weapon was mostly enjoyed by royalty or landed gentry; such fine hunting weapons such as these were not used by the peasant class. These items were masterfully made by the finest weapon cutlers of the age. They were very expensive in their time thus their usage was pretty much limited to the rich and affluent. This magnificent example that we offer is exceptionally well made with straight blade. The grip is covered in ray skin. The clamshell guard that protects the action is in brass with a central human figure with a bull that may have been a riding mount within “poetic saga.” This could possibly be the familiar portrayal of Europa with the bull. To each side of this pair are figures of mythical men that would put you in mind of Hercules or the Titans. These figures are all very worn (good wear) from many years of usage. The blade shows some engraving of game, deer and boar that are also quite worn down; there is also some vestige of Celtic or Teutonic design at the base of the blade. The D Guard and the finial are also in decorated brass. The weapon undoubtedly dates from the early 18th century. The flintlock pistol that is attached is of steel and is engraved with a running wild boar nicely offered in typical artistic style of that century. The firearm component is finished like a fine weapon not crude like other specimens we have seen. The pistol is signed F Schunke in Bingen -- this would be the hamlet of Bingen am Rhein. The entire mechanism functions perfectly, the gun is in practically perfect condition with the engraving on it much finer and very noticeably un-worn, unlike the sword.  This is because the gun is virtually protected from wear by the clamshell guard and was not exposed to the wear that the sword was. This weapon in German is a Hirshfanger: the traditional sidearm of the German hunter. Only a few were ever made in this combination style and thus are extremely rare and seldom found today."

Were these ring pistols actually designed to be used for self-defence or assassination? Or were they mere novelties?

I would say that assassination would be pushing it a bit on the whole. Self-defence and novelties I would say probably yes, as talk is of gambling guns, or being favoured by Mafia and Nazis.

Around the turn of the century Italian-American street gangs constructed their own crude pistols disguised as pens. These were known as zip-guns

Axe with multi-barreled firearm from the Tower of London
This unique weapon, made in Germany and dated circa 1580, combines an axe with six barrels. Two locks are present, a wheel-lock and a matchlock; the other four barrels were to be lit with a handheld match.

This is a 15" Civil War Pistol Sword with working hammer. The 10.5" blade is silver and made from 1045 surgical steel. The blade is secretly hidden inside the gun barrel. Very heavy and sturdy. Beautifully made with intricate detailing. Comes with a detailed black and steel case. Blade slides into the case easily and snug to avoid the blade from slipping out. The handle of the pistol is cream and steel with detailing. Blade is very shiny and sharp.

Who did this pistol sword belong to? Was it used by an officer on campaign, or was it a civilian weapon?

Cool. I've seen a similar Burmese weapon where the barrel of a carbine serves as the handle of a sword blade concealed in the stock

Alani, i once saw a similar weapon in an old militaria catalog. The lock may well have come from a European gun, but the blade and barrel were hand-forged. From what i remember reading, the Dha was a Burmese copy of the Chinese Dao sword and had a long grip so it could be wielded double-handed

Judging by the engraving, the owner must have been very wealthy. Were these pistol spears actually used for hunting, or were they more of a curio?

Haven't been able to find out if they were actually used for hunting, but my guess is they were both made for wealthy clients, with the more ornate one for a more wealthy client than the other. The top one is a double barrelled boar spear, made by Peter Peck of Munich in 1500, and the one below is by Ranseur of southern Germany, and is of a similar design, and was made in 1560.

The lock and folding trigger are probably from a pocket "muff pistol," but the barrel could have come from a Queen Anne.
