An old thread that I thought should be revived.

 

August 14

1457 The first book ever printed is published by a German astrologer named Faust. He is thrown in jail while trying to sell books in Paris. Authorities concluded that all the identical books meant Faust had dealt with the devil.

Or for that matter the lotus sutra.

Hmm, it was the first fully printed bible yes, but not necessarily the first fully printed book.
And i think you mean the Diamond sutra, the oldest ever dated printed text found, dating to around 850 AD, though with 5 pages or so, its not much of a book.

The Chinese invented printing hundreds of years before this, so I think it is likely there is an older book somewhere, waiting to be found.

Well, as mentioned, theres the Diamond Sutra, but its not much of a book.
But this is a book that was mass printed, not just a couple copies, which was the case with many printed (partialy printed or otherwise) texts and books before this date, both in Europe and Asia.

But the Chinese used wood block printing. Gutenburg used movable type (which meant you could make printings of multiple pages easier).

chinese invented movable type too, but it was impractical for their script so they stuck to wood block.

It isn't a logical leap to start from wood block to movable type.
