An old thread that I thought should be revived.

August 14

1457 The first book ever printed is published by a German astrologer named Faust. He is thrown in jail while trying to sell books in Paris. Authorities concluded that all the identical books meant Faust had dealt with the devil.

i thought the first book ever printed was gutenburgs bible?

Or for that matter the lotus sutra.

On t his day, August 15, 60 years ago, Allied forces conducted a second, less well known landing in Southern France, operation Anvil.

35 years ago today, the woodstock festivil was held.

Hmm, it was the first fully printed bible yes, but not necessarily the first fully printed book.
And i think you mean the Diamond sutra, the oldest ever dated printed text found, dating to around 850 AD, though with 5 pages or so, its not much of a book.

The Chinese invented printing hundreds of years before this, so I think it is likely there is an older book somewhere, waiting to be found.

Well, as mentioned, theres the Diamond Sutra, but its not much of a book.
But this is a book that was mass printed, not just a couple copies, which was the case with many printed (partialy printed or otherwise) texts and books before this date, both in Europe and Asia.

But the Chinese used wood block printing. Gutenburg used movable type (which meant you could make printings of multiple pages easier).

chinese invented movable type too, but it was impractical for their script so they stuck to wood block.

It isn't a logical leap to start from wood block to movable type.

Beggining of the Battle of Kocatepe, Turkish Independence War.

26 August 1922 06.30

Sides: Turkish Forces Chief of Staff Mustafa Kemal

Greek Forces Chief of Staff Stephanu Hacianesti

The final battle between the Turks and the Greeks. The invading Greek army is annihilated in the fields of Western Anatolia during the following 4 days. Final battle is the Battle of Chief of Staff on August 30 where the main Greek army is blown to pieces near Dumlupinar. That date is celebrated as the day of victory in Turkey every year.

Following the miserable defeat of the Greek army, the cease-fire of Mudanya is signed followed by the treaty of Lausanne which was a milestone in the history of modern Turkey.

"Come out Hacianesti and save your armies"

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk/August 26 1922

"Who told you to come here, my poor boy"

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk expressing his concern about the Greek soldiers who died on the fields of Kocatepe. Witnesses reported that he asked an aide to lift a Greek flag from the ground. Also when he entered the Mayors house in Izmir after liberation, the hosts had placed a Greek flag near the entrance so that he could step on it. The hosts asked him to do as the Greek king did when he first entered the house in 1920. He refused and said "He might have disrespected a nations sovereignty, but I will not, lift the flag from the ground and clean it"

No offense Greek friends,it was history...we all had our mistakes

But of course, both the above two quotes sound very historical to me!
