Topic: An independent Montenegro? Posted: 22-May-2006 at 08:53 |
I like that one. What does "porodice"(sp?) mean by the way?
Happy independence day Montenegro! :)

Yes, happy independence.

They actually made shirts with "Yes" in latin script, mainly for the
Bosniak-populated north. I think that's a pretty good sign! The people
in the Sandzak are celebrating too.

Yep. It's so weird. I still don't wrap my mind around it.
I guess the Bosniak congress doesn't have much sway over its voters. :D They recommended voting for the union in April:
They'll have to change their map symbol thing:
And now that the capital, Novi Pazar, is in Serbia - what will be the capital of the Montenegrin Sandzak? I'd say Plav-Gusinje:
Or Rozaje:

By the way, Montenegrins traditionally called northern Montenegro "The
Bosnian Highlands". It was called "The Highlands" during the Yugoslav
and post-Yugoslav era. I wonder if they'll change the name back to
Bosnian? That'd be funny.

I'm also curious, will Montenegrins keep their capital Podgorica or move it back to Niksic or Cetinje or some such place?

bg_Turk,
Porodice means family...
I would think that Niksic would be the capital city, but who knows... This is actually pretty exciting! Ive been listening to no name all day!

I have to say, thats a cool looking flag right there.
I think Montenegro's independance is going to become rather negative in the long run for them. I mean it whooly based on the surrent situation of Serbia today, but what about 50 years from now? Will Serbia still be in the same shape? I doubt it but the memory of this event surely wont fade. Montenegro doesnt have much to go on, tourism at best. Serbia can rebound in the future and phoenix herself. From now on, Montenegro will have to pay for goods coming in from Serbia and Serbia vice versa. To the Montey's it may seem like small fries for now, but what about as things recover in Serbia? As industries start up again?

I think it's in the long-term that Montenegro will be better off.
Montenegro and Kosovo both suffered from the same thing - good
intentions in Tito's Yugoslavia. More money was spent in Montenegro and
Kosovo that was spent in the rest of Yugoslavia combined, I bet - but
they were all investments that never worked, and never really could
work. Bosnia, although it had a significantly higher standard of living
in those years, was even WORSE off. At least in Montenegro and Kosovo
they had fake industries that outlasted socialist patronage a few
years, Bosnia was heavily administrative so when socialism was gone, so
was a massive chunk of the available employment.
Anyhow... in the short term Montenegro is going to have a rude
awakening. The reasons for separating from Serbia are problems they
will have to face as well, and once Djukanovic and his mafia government
(and they are) start living like kings at the expense of the people
(and they will), the general population will get frustrated.
Tourism is going to get a boost in Montenegro. There are more people
than anyone cares who admit who refuse to enter Serbia, especially from
the former Yugoslavia, and they'll now start going into Montenegro -
especially Slovenian tourists to the coast and Bosniak tourists to the
Sandzak, which was rising steadily even during Serbia-Montenegro.
Serbian tourists will still go, most of the "Serbian tourists" they
constantly bragged were supporting Montenegro were Montenegrins anyway,
just going back home for vacations.
If they play their cards right, they could end up latching on to sea
and transport businesses. Rijeka (Croatia) will always have the upper
hand here, and Albania is catching up, but Montenegro could compete
too. Kotor bay can take some pretty big ships. It's not like Neum
(Bosnia) where they'd beach themselves still two kilometers from shore.
Serbia could be worse off if Montenegro decides to f--k them over
trade/tariff wise, but they pretty much both have their foot to each
other's neck so it'll be, economically, a cold war - if any war.
Serbia, right now, is being held back by its own doing. It's recovered
enough that any foriegn investment there is going to be as worthwhile
as it'd be anywhere else. Once they get rid of the war hangover and
bend over enough to satisfy the international community, they'll
recover very quickly - watch and see.
Montenegro, though, overall - is relative. It was always one of the
poorest regions of Yugoslavia. People there aren't expecting mansions
and sidewalks that move. Even a moderate recovery will be enough to
have made independence worth it.

I think you're mostly right-especially about the tourism part-it is their most significant source of incomes...and guess who makes 90 % of their tourists...yes-it's us-their brothers - the serbs.Over 500000 of us use to spend our summers there...now, after all that's been so arogantly said and done...i sincerely doubt it...I prefere greece...and a no. of people shares my opinion.
People in serbia are fed up with the whole thing...we're glad it's over.

We can only profit from the whole thing-it's them who cannot go to our universities for free,to get medical treatment they don't have at home for free anymore...On the other hand-we get more money for our own bussiness...
