Muslims did use crossbows. Bihzad probably painted this in Herat in what is now northern Afghanistan. http://www.warfare.altervista.org/Persia/Timurid/Assault_on_a_Castle.htm - Timurid Assault on a Castle, by Bihzad c.1480 (featuring crossbows) , http://www.warfare.altervista.org/Persia/Timurid/Assault_on_a_Castle-upper.htm - Upper detail of Timurid defenders with crossbow & http://www.warfare.altervista.org/Persia/Timurid/Assault_on_a_Castle-lower.htm - Lower detail of Timurid besiegers with crossbow The crossbows have a rope stirrup that hangs loose at the end of the crossbow.

Having shot them...it would be interesting to know the psi 'then' versus the more modern materials used now. As usual it's fine stuff.
