Muslims did use crossbows. Bihzad probably painted this in Herat in what is now northern Afghanistan.

The crossbows have a rope stirrup that hangs loose at the end of the crossbow.

Having shot them...it would be interesting to know the psi 'then' versus the more modern materials used now. As usual it's fine stuff.
