There was issues with the isreali M60 'sabra' upgrades, i dont think turkey is upgrading the whole fleet.

yes. they bought some 298 second hand Leopard A4's. i suspect out of necessity, because Greece was  already starting to build its own fleet. Both countries have rather old tanks so even second hand leopard 2's would of simply dominated the others.

turkey is looking beyond the leopard for something more long term than a few hundred ex- European tanks.

I don't think that Turkey has Merkavas.
And about the Sabra, I think Turkey is upgrading about 170 M60s out of about 700.
Turkey has a plan of building (in Turkey) 1000 modern tanks. They were close to agreement with France for the Leclerc, but I don't know what happened in the end.

I highly doubt the french can currently sell to the turks. There was a freeze in military relations last year (don't know if its changed), but i'll assume the chances are much smaller than before.

The Korean http://www.army-technology.com/projects/k1/ - KA/A1 tank has been touted as a potential design.

The http://www.army-technology.com/projects/sabra/index.html - Sabra is a hell of allot better than the M60 but it isn't on the level to the newer designs. I think the cost were too high to upgrade the whole fleet, Janes reported 1 billion for the whole M60 fleet in Feb 2000. Since Turkey has a massive fleet of rather old tanks (M48), modernization is going to be very expensive and take some time.

Looks wise I'm kind of glad it won over Boeing's X-32. About 5 or so years ago they were showing the US militaires trials on picking either this craft or Boeing's. I remember Boeing went through a few problems, which is why the US Brass chose this one.

"Turkey initially bought 50 Popeye I missiles for its fleet of F-4s being upgraded at Israel Aircraft Industries. At least 40 Popeye I missiles were delivered to Turkey in 1997 with a second batch of 60 shipped in 1998. In May 1997 Israel and Turkey agreed to jointly produce the Popeye II air-to-ground missile in a deal initially worth about $100 million dollars. The new deal involved a consortium to be established between two Turkish firms and Rafael to jointly produce the Popeye II, a smaller missile with more advanced technology. The Popeye II, also known as the Have Lite, is designed for deployment on fighter aircraft and has a range of 150 kilometers. The Popeye II missiles were expected to be delivered beginning in 2000. Their self-propelled is much better than all those US hand-me-downs we both seem to collect. Yeah not as good as the PzH 2000 which AFIAK is the best on the market, but a very appropriate weapon that comes very close.

The Firtina is a Turkish built variant on the Korean K9.

Korean K9:

Firtina 155:

"The new K9 howitzer, South Korean designed and developed, will give the Republic of Korea Army a significant improvement in capability over the current M109A2. With a claimed a range of 40 km, it offers greater mobility, longer range and higher rate of fire, and increased battlefield survivability as it can quickly be brought into action, open fire and come out of action. It is, therefore, less likely to be engaged by counterbattery fire. K9 is an indegenous system of an all-welded steel armour contruction which is rated to withstand impact by 14.5mm armour piercing shells and 152mm shell fragments. The main armament consists of a 155mm/52 caliber ordnance with a maximum firing range of 40km. State-of-the-art mobility subsystems include a 1,000 horsepower engine with potential for growth and hydropneumatic suspension unit."

"After receiving a fire command, the K9 thunder is able to fire on a target within 30 seconds at emplacement and within 60 seconds from movement. Even though TOT (time on target) firing may be accomplished by several howitzers simultaneously, the K9 thunder is able to more efficiently accomplish the same task by simply changing its fire data. The K9 thunder alone can produce three times as much as the M109A2 155mm SPH in firing capability."

Even better these guys have a table for comparison Thumbs%20Up, interesting how much better it is over a pretty new version of the M109 (which its replacing in both korea and i would guess in turkey).

Well,i must note that the M109 is not actually a modern weapon. It was developed 2 decades ago,so it's more than natural for superior self-propelled howitzers to exist in 2007.

This post is on another Israeli system that turkey has in service, like the Popeye its something that can challenge air defenses.

HARPY

what is it ?
Harpy is a "Fire-and-Forget" all-weather, day/night autonomous weapon system, launched from a ground vehicle behind the battle zone or from ship based launchers, designed to detect, attack and destroy radar emitters. 1
The Harpy is a delta-winged machine with finlets on the wingtips. It weighs 135 kilograms  and is 2.7 meters (8 feet 10 inches) long with a span of 2.1 meters (6 feet 10 inches.    It is powered by a UAV Engines Limited (UEL) AR731 rotary engine, with 28 kW (37 HP), driving a pusher propeller. Maximum speed is roughly 185 KPH (115 MPH / 100 knots), and endurance is about six hours with range of 500 km. It is sealed in its sealed launcher/container, to endure harsh battlefield conditions. It can be fueled or defueled in the launcher, therefore retaining its readiness at all time. The system uses periodical built-in test to maintain full readiness. 1, 2

How it works..
"The Harpy mission is planned and programmed in the battery ground control center, as an independent mission, or planned in accordance with other manned or unmanned systems. The drone flies autonomously enroute to its patrol area its radar seeker head constantly search for hostile radars. Once suspicious radar is acquired, Harpy compares the signal to the library of hostile emitters, and prioritizes the threat. If the target is verified, the drone enters an attack mode, as it transitions into a near vertical dive, homing on the signal. The drone is set to detonate its warhead just above the target, to generate the highest damage to the antennae, and surrounding facilities. If the radar is turned off before Harpy strikes, the drone can abort the attack and continue loitering. If no radar was spotted during the mission, the drone is programmed to self destruct over a designated area. Follow-on systems which are already proposed to foreign clients, are calling for a combination of seeker and killer drones that will enable visual identification and attack of targets even after they turn off their emitters." 1

and turkey?

"In a deal dating back to 1999, the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) have taken delivery of a number on Harpy lethal unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Israel Aircraft Industries Ltd. (IAI). The exact number is unknown, but reports suggest that more than 100 lethal UAVs were delivered. "1, 3

it would be good for some turkish contribution, we are limited to English speaking sites. What is happening with this site? Greeks showing off the turkish military! LOL

BTW dont take the US weapons as being far superior to what you (we) have. The F16's in turkey are as good as what the USAF have, esp after the upgrades. The Popeye for instance, is now made for the USA, while the new artillery is actaully better than what the US currently deploys. So its not a complete story of the USA making better stuff.

The Vipers (F16) are fairly out of date now aren't they? Are they planning on replenishing  supplies by purchasing different new generation fighters, or upgrading the F-16 Fighter Falcons? They have 216 at current.

For countries like turkey (and Greece) they are great value, ill add the options they have below.
Turkey is updating her entire fleet to Blk50+ standard and just bought another 30 to top up attrition and also stay a little ahead of Greece, which itself built its fleet up not that long ago with advanced types.

Some of the drivers i see behind Turkish airforce planning:
- The cold war like environment between it and Greece.
- Most neighbors don't have very strong air forces.
- Limited budget.

This would make a strong argument for a; relatively cheap fighter that is better than its neighbors and equal to what Greece operates.

Other (light fighter) choices turkey has:

- Go Russian & piss off USA, not a politically good option.
- Go with a more expensive French plane like Mirage 2000, problem is its production line is closed.
- Buy the newer Gripen, with more growth potential but it's less powerful, less range, & expensive spares.
- China's new solid looking fighter brings on the same political implications as the Russian option.
India's upcoming fighter is a no-go as far as I'm concerned.
- The F-35 program.  This is what they are actually doing but it'll take a while so they still need the current fleet.
