Another rare Nazi jet: the Heinkel 162 People's Fighter. These were inexpensive to build and easy to replace, being built largely of plywood. As most of Germany's aces had been killed by this time, it was proposed these jets would be flown by Hitler Youth

While not a jet-fighter, this prototype American rocket-plane set the speed record in 1959. The X-15 reached the edge of outer space and is the ancestor of the space shuttle

The MiG-21 Fishbed entered service in 1960 and remained in production for almost 30 years. It destroyed many American fighters in Vietnam and is still used by the Indian Air Force

The F-84 Thunderjet first flew in 1948 but by the time of the Korean War it was outclassed by the Mig-15. Although an improved design with swept-back wings entered service, the Americans soon replaced it in Korea with the Sabre

The Sukhoi 22 Fitter, first flown in 1955, was Ivan's top fighter-bomber in the 60s. During the Indo-Pakistani War one of these planes made it back to base after surviving a direct hit from a Pakistani Sidewinder missile
