Women's History - April 21st
1729 - Today, Catherine II of Russia was born in Germany (she was born a princess). She went on to become the ruler of Russia when she married the heir to the Russian throne, Grand Duke Peter of Holstein (grandson of Peter the Great). She helped engineer the removal of her husband from the throne and took power as Tsarina (Queen). Some think she may have been responsible for her husbands death. She did a great job during her reign, expanding Russias borders to the Black Sea and into central Europe. She was often remembered for her many lovers.

Women's History - April 25th
1917 - Today, Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Virginia (USA). She went on to become what most consider to be one of the greatest singers of all times. She had amazing diversity in both style and range. She began as a swing singer, then moved on to bebop, scat and jazz. She also sang modern songs as well as classics, i.e. blues, bossanova, gospel, calypso. She sang with a full orchestra or just with a guitar, and sang with the best of the best, including, but not limited to, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, to just mention a few. She is one of my favorite singers.

Women's History - April 26th
1828 - Today, Martha Finley was born in Chilicothe, Ohio. Her exact birth date is unknown. (some say it was April 27th, others say April 28th). In any event, I will write about her today. Although a teacher by profession, Martha Finley went on to become a writer. She is best known as the author of the Elsie Dinsmore series. These series consisted of melodramatic and sentimental fiction and focused on the main characters (Elsie) life, discussing everything from her relationship with her father to her weak and teary private moments. The series consisted of 28 volumes and were published over a 38 year period. She originally wrote under the pseudonym Martha Farquharson (which is Gaelic for Finley). She also wrote a second series Mildred Keith which consisted of 7 volumes, again, discussing her main characters (Mildred) life and that of her family. Additionally, she wrote over 50 short books/pamphlets (for children).
