Occurring in Women's History on May 12th:
1820 – Florence Nightingale was born (nurse, reformer, statistician). Florence Nightingale made history with her nursing work in the Crimean War and helped shake up the field of medicine. Florence Nightingale 1970: Nelly Sachs died today. (Nobel Laureate, Swedish poet). She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966 (Nobel Laureate, Swedish poet) Sachs was a German Jew who was born in Berlin. In 1940, Swedish writer, Selma Lagerlöf helped Nelly Sachs escape to Sweden with her mother, escaping the fate of the rest of her family in Nazi concentration camps. Nelly Sachs eventually took on Swedish nationality. Nelly Sachs began her life in Sweden by translating Swedish works to German. After the war, when she began writing poetry to memorialize the Jewish experience in the Holocaust, her work began to win critical and public acclaim. Her 1950 radio play Eli is especially noted. Women's History - May 13th
1847 –Zelinda Gilbert (a/k/a Linda Gilbert) was born in New York, USA. She is remembered as a prison reformer for establishing a library (and other services) for prison inmates. At that time, prison inmates had no reading materials available to them. Source: http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9125751 1850 - Ellen Spencer Mussey was born in Ohio, USA. She helped found a co-educational law school to promote the social and economic advancement of women. This was at a time in the U.S.A. when women were often excluded from higher education. She became a lawyer (self-tutored in law) and went out and lectured primarily for local women who were frustrated by the men-only admission policies of most law schools. She further co-established the Washington College of Law, which later became part of he American University. She was the first dean of that school. Ellen Spencer Mussey 1995 - Alison Hargreaves (a British mother of two) reaches the peak of Mount Everest without oxygen or sherpas. She was the first woman and the second person to do so. Women's History - May 14th
1861 - 18-year-old Adela Juana Maria Patti (opera singer) made European debut. Adelina was born in Madrid, Spain to a Sicilian father and Italian mother in 1843. Both of her parents were involved in opera and the family moved, in 1847, to New York for better employment opportunities for a show business family. Adelina became one of the most famous women in the world and the highest paid. She was one of the first “international superstars”. http://www.opera-singer.co.uk/ 
Adelina Patti 1991: Winnie Mandela sentenced to six years in prison for taking part in a kidnapping. She was known as the “Mother of Africa” and was the wife of anti-apartheid campaigner, Nelson Mandela. In passing sentence, the judge, Mr Justice Stegmann, called her an "unblushing and unprincipled liar". Mandela’s housekeeper and driver were also found guilty of taking part in the kidnapping of our youths who were suspected of being police informers. One of the four, 14-year old Stompie Moesketsi, died from his injuries. Mandela’s chief bodyguard, Jerry Richardson, had been sentenced to death for the boy’s murder, earlier in the year. Mandela’s sentence was subsequently cut when a court partially upheld an appeal and reduced her prison term for fraud to a suspended sentence and escaped a prison sentence. Women's History - May 15th
1886 - Emily Dickinson died on this day. She was an American lyrical poet, and an obsessively private writer. Only seven of her some 1800 poems were published during her lifetime. Withdrawing herself from social contact at 23 years of age, she devoted herself to writing. Here’s her biography together with some of her work. Emily Dickinson 1937 - Madeleine Korbel Albright was born. She is the first woman Secretary of State in the United States. She also served as a Senior Fellow in Soviet and Eastern European Affairs at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, conducting research in developments and trends in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Madeleine Albright 1991 - Edith Cresson takes office as first woman Prime Minister of France. She made headlines by claiming that one in four British men were "homosexuals" and attributing the economic success of the Japanese to their "ant-like" qualities. After only 10 months, her ineffectual leadership, erratic tenure, and record low poll ratings, ended. Cresson blamed her low ratings and downfall on a “macho plot”. 17l8 - Maria Agnesi was born in Milan, Italy. She was the first woman appointed as a mathematics professor at a university. She wrote the first mathematics book by a woman that still survives. Thank you for your kind words, Seko. This is my contribution to the preservation of the human female species. Had it not been for these women that I write about here, my life (as a woman) would be totally different than it is today. I give much credit to these women for giving me the strength, the courage and the wisdom to fulfill my destiny in this lifetime to its fullest.

1874 - Bertha Kalich was born. She was a Jewish actress, born in Lemberg, Galicia (now Lviv, Ukraine). Bertha Kalich 1903 -Lena Levine was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents were Russian Jews from Lithuana who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1890's. Women’s History - May 18th
1869 - Rachelle Slobodinsky Yarros was born today in Berdechev (near Kiev), Russia. At age 18, she joined a subversive political society and was forced to flee from Czarist police to the United States. She eventually became the first woman admitted to College of Physicians and Surgeons in Boston, earning an M.D. degree in 1893. Women's History - May 19th
1568 - Queen Elizabeth of England arrested Mary, Queen of Scots. Most vexing to Elizabeth was the situation with Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary was in Elizabeth’s custody since 1568 for her own protection from disgruntled Scots and from radical Protestants. However, Mary gained the loyalty of Catholic factions and instituted several overthrow plots against her cousin, Elizabeth. Elizabeth had Mary executed in 1587, after irrefutable evidence of Mary’s involvement in the assassination/overthrow plots came to light, and Elizabeth succumbed to the pressure from her advisors. Elizabeth I of England 1836 - Cynthia Ann Parker was captured by Comanches (ca. 1827-ca. 1864). A large force of Comanche warriors accompanied by Kiowa and Kichi allies attacked the fort where Cynthia Ann was in, and, during said raid, seized five captives, including Cynthia Ann Parker. Eventually, the other four were released, but Cynthia remained with the Comanches for 25 years. She forgot the “white” ways and became thoroughly Comanche. She never voluntarily returned to white society. Subsequently, she married Peta Nocona and eventually had two sons and a daughter, one of her sons was Quanah Parker, who later went on to become Comanche chief. Women's History - May 20th
1851: Mother Mary Alphonsa Lathrop (Rose Hawthorne Lathrop) was born. She was the youngest daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne (the writer). She was married to George Lathrop and both embraced Roman Catholicism. As a mission, she chose to help poor patients who suffered from incurable cancer and who lived in the slums of New York City. After her husband died, she became a nun and founded a community of “sisters” (Dominican tertiaries) to perpetuate her work. Women's History - May 21st
1888 - Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross today. Though she is remembered as the founder of the American Red Cross, her only prewar medical experience came when, for 2 years, she nursed an invalid brother. Barton learned that wounded men from “First Bull Run” (during Civil War) suffered not from want of attention, but from lack of medical supplies, so she advertised for donations and began an independent organization to distribute goods. She was granted a general pass by the U.S. Surgeon General William A. Hammond to travel with army ambulances for purposes of distributing comforts for the sick and wounded, and nursing them. Clara Barton 1944 – Mary Bourke Robinson was born . In November 1990, without the endorsement of the major parties, Mary Robinson was elected president of Ireland. A champion of women’s rights and civil liberties, Robinson was the first woman to hold so high an office in the country. For many in Ireland, Robinson’s election was an important symbol of social change. Robinson resigned the post in 1997 to become the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Women's History - May 22nd 1802 - Martha Dandridge Custis Washington died today of a severe fever. She was 27 years old when she married the first president of the United States, George Washington. She was one of the wealthiest women in Virginia, when she inherited 15,000 acres of farmland from her deceased husband, Daniel Parke Custis. Martha Washington 1849 - Bertha Honore Palmer was born today. She was a socialite and was married to one of the richest men in Chicago society, Potter Palmer. Bertha belonged to the Chicago Woman’s club, a progressive organization that lobbied for fair treatment of women and children in hospitals, prisons, poorhouses and in neighborhoods that received too little attention from city government. She used her home to organize female factory workers and coordinate strikes. During the World’s Columbian Exposition, she served as the de facto hostess for Chicago, entertaining royalty and presidents. A quick resume of the month of may in French women history 7th of May 1429: Major victory of Jeanne d'Arc in front of Orléans against the English. 23rd of May 1430: Jeanne d'Arc is captured in Compiegne. 30 of may 1431: Jeanne of Arc is burn on stake at Rouen. 13th may 1613: Marie de Medicis is crowned Queen of France. The very next day, her royal husband Henri IV is murdered in the streets of Paris. She beomes the first regent of the century. 17th of may 1642: Jeanne Mance is second in command during the foundation of Quebec. 14th of may 1643: Death of Louis XIII, Anne d'Autriche becomes regent. 7th of may 1748: Olympe de Gouge is born, she will write the Woman and Citizen Rights in 1791. 20th may 1919: Law about the women vote (not effective). 1st of may 1949: Simone de Beauvoir publishes her essay titled the Second sex. 7th of may 1974: Simone Veil becomes minister of health, she will be at the origine of the free abortion law. 15th may 1991: Edith Cresson becomes the first woman French prime minister. 30th of may 2000: the Constitutional Consil accepts the new article about men and women parity in the institutions. Women's History - May 23rd 1846 - Arabella Mansfield was born today. Arabella was the first woman admitted to the bar in the United States, making her the first woman lawyer admitted to practice law. 1819 - the future Queen Victoria of England was born today. She was the only child of the fourth son of King George III: Edward, Duke of Kent and Victoria Maria Louisa of Saxe-Coburg (sister of King Leopold of the Belgians). Alexandrina Victoria became heiress-apparent of the British crown on the death of her uncle, George IV, and, when her uncle, William IV, died childless in 1837, she became Queen of Great Britain. Queen Victoria 1923 - Siobhan McKenna was born today in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She was an Irish stage and screen actress. May I ask you what the hell Victoria is doing in this Women History section? What I mean is she was a woman all right but arguably she was so distant from general women conditions and did so little for and as a woman in her public life that she belongs more in the general history section in my sense.

Well, no matter what she did or did not do for womankind, she is still a female, a royal, and she is part of history. In any event, it seems like most women of royalty during that era were a bit pompous and self-absorbed. 1680 - Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh was born today. She was the founder of the city of Haddonfield in New Jersey. 1877 - Isadora Duncan was born today in San Francisco, California. She became the leader of the modern dance movement and founded dance schools all around the world. Tragically, her husband, Sergie Esenin (a poet) committed suicide after their short marriage and she died when her scarf became entangled in the wheels of her automobile. Women's History - May 27th
1818 – Amelia Jenks Bloomer was born today. Amelia Bloomer was the woman who introduced Susan B. Anthony to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, initiating a collaboration that would last half a century. She was a writer who published “The Lily”, a monthly temperance paper whereby she became the voice for Stanton and other advocates of women’s interests. She promoted changes in women’s restrictive attire, in favor of shorter skirts and knee-length undergarments that came to be known as “Bloomers”. 1963 – Equal Pay Act was passed by Congress, on the recommendation of John F. Kennedy’s commission on the status of women, declaring that women and men must receive equal pay for equal work. Together with her late husband, Sergei Grinkov, they won four World Championships and two Olympic Gold Medals (in 1988 and 1994) in pair skating . May 29th - Memorial Day in the U.S.
Today is Memorial Day. This all-American holiday is primarily to honor all the brave men and women who died in military service. It was originally also called Decoration Day and has its roots in the practice of women decorating the graves of their loved ones who had died in the Civil War. Women's History - May 29th 1845 – Elizabeth Allston Pringle was born today in South Carolina, USA. Her father (who became governor of South Carolina) owned one of the largest plantations in the south. She endured a raid by Sherman’s troops during the Civil War, and, eventually, the property was lost to creditors. To supplement her income, Pringle began writing weekly letters for the New York Sun describing her life on a southern rice plantation. She later collected the letters and published them as a single volume entitled "A Woman Rice Planter". Women's History - May 30th
1431- Joan of Arc was burned at the stake today on charges of heresy. Three indictments were made against her, after a year-long trial. They said that she used magic because she claimed she heard voices from Saints Michael, Catherine and Margaret and that these voices told her to dress as a boy and fight the French in the Hundred Years War against the English. Joan of Arc 1889 - invention of the brassiere - Mary Phelps Jacob was the first to patent an undergarment named “Brassiere” derived from the old French word for “upper arm”. Her patent was for a device that was lighweight, soft and separated the breasts naturally. The only undergarment available in those days was a corset, which was tight and restricting. Women's History - May 31st
1912 - Chien Shiung Wu was born today in Liuhe, a small town in Shangai. She became the first woman to receive the prestigious Research Corporation Award and the Comstock Prize (given only once every five years) from the National Academy of Sciences, in recognition for her contributions to atomic research and the understanding of beta decay and the weak interactions. She became a pioneer physicist by radically changing our view of the structure of the universe and by altering modern physical theory. She became the first African-Amreican woman to serve as a member of a presidential cabinet (President Jimmy Carter named her Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and later appointed her Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare). She was also the first African American woman to serve as U.S. ambassador to Luxemburg (President Lyndon B. Johnson) and was the first woman to serve as dean of Howard University Law School. 1533 - Anne Boleyn is crowned as Queen today. She married (2nd wife of) Henry VIII of England after his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon was annulled. Later that year, she gave birth to the future Queen Elizabeth. After the king had grown disenchanted with her, she was charged with adultery an treason, imprisoned in the Tower of London, and then beheaded in 1536. Anne Boleyn 1660 - Mary Dyer is hanged today. Dyer and her husband, William, were banished from Massachusetts when they sided with Anne Hutchinson in the Antinomian heresy in 1630s. She then settled in Rhode Island, but was arrested a year later for teaching Quakerism in New Haven. She was again arrested when she returned to Massachusetts to visit two English Quakers in jail. Two of her comrades were hanged, but she received a last minute reprieve. She returned to Rhode Island, but again defied the anti-Quaker law by returning to Massachusetts, and,this time, her sentence was carried out the day after her conviction. She was assistant editor of “Africa”, an anthropological journal, when she worked at the International African Institute. . Barbara Pym 1953- Queen Elizabeth II of England is crowned today at a coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey in London (she was formally announced as Queen on February 2). She was on this day handed the four symbols of authority (the orb, the scepter, the rod of mercy and the royal ring of sapphire and rubies) and then Dr. Geoffrey Fisher, the Archbishop of Canterbury, placed St. Edward’s Crown on her head, completing the ceremony. 1911 - Harlean Harlow Carpenter was born today. She later became Jean Harlow, the original blong sex queen of Hollywood had a chaotic private life. The daughter of a dentist who eloped at age 16 with a 23-year old businessman, she moved to Los Angeles working as an extra and bit player. Her first big break came when she worked with Howard Hughes in “Hell’s Angels”. Her platinum hair and more than obvious sexuality made her a hit. 1646 - Elena Cornaro Piscopia was born today. She was a mathematician, prodigy and became the first female to be awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1678. The heritage of the Cornaro family can be traced back to the Roman family of Cornelii, with ancestors including cardinals and popes. She was honored after her death as a woman of learning. The University of Padua has a marble statue of her. Vassar College in New York has a stained glass window depicting her achievement. It was against his advice that she initiated the end of the Thirty Years War, culminating with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Today is 06/06/06 - I just heard on the radio (on my way to work this a.m.) that many pregnant women were wishing not to have their child born on a date that is considered to be the "sign of the Devil (666)".  I guess the appropriate name of any child born today would be DAMIEN!
1826 - Sarah Parker Remond was born today in Massachusetts and was a free person of color. However, she was constantly prejudiced for being black. During one such incident, she was pushed down the stairs and ejected from a theater, suffering a physical injury. She prevailed in a lawsuit against the managers and received an award of $500.00 as compensation for the incident. Her objective was to vindicate a right, not to make money on the case. She was raised in a family of abolitionists and as a child witnessed many incidents involving the “Underground Railroad” and the horrors of slavery. 1662 - Celia Fiennes was born today in Salisbury, England. She traveled extensively throughout England and kept notes in a personal journal about the places she visited. After her death in 1741, her journal was discovered and published three years later under the title, “Through England on a Side Saddle”. Her journal provided the first comprehensive survey of the country since William Camden’s “Britannia” (1586). She returned to Europe in 1866 seeking the aid of Napoleon III and the pope, after Napoleon III decided to withdraw the French troops from Mexico and the fate of the empire became apparent. However, her pleas were in vain. . The Mexican empire ended with the execution of Maximilian in 1867. Today in Woman’s History, two women were born who went on to become mathematicians as follows: 1858 - Charlotte Angas Scott was born today in England. She is considered to be a pioneer for advancement of women’s role in higher education, specifically the field of mathematics, and was one of England’s first women to obtain a doctorate in mathematics. She was the initiator of the College Entrance Examination Board and was one of the organizers of the American Mathematical Society. She published articles on three-dimensional sections of hypersolids in the 1900s, and also worked on deriving Archimedean solids from Platonic solids. 1843 – Bertha von Suttner (nee Countess Bertha Kinsky) was born today in Austria. She was a peace activist, an author, and was secretary to Alfred Nobel in Paris. She was critical of the application of dynamite in the military and worked actively for the peace movement in Austria and Germany. Among her many famous books is the classic “Die Waffen neider” (Lay Down Your Arms). 1769 – Anne Newport Royall was born today in Baltimore, Maryland USA. In her 50s, she traveled across the country and published 10 accounts of her travels, which remain valuable sources of social history. She was eccentric and acerbic and was convicted in Washington, D.C., in 1829 of being a “common scold,” the result of her antagonism to a local Presbyterian church. In 1831 she began to publish her outspoken and controversial views on various subjects in her Washington newspaper, and hence became, and considered by many to be, the nation’s first newspaperwoman (journalist). 1842 - Camilla Urso was born today in Nantes, France to an Italian father (a flutist) and a Portuguese mother (a singer). She began taking violin lessons at the age of six and went on to become one of the finest violinists of the latter half of the 19th century. She played both classic and contemporary works and performed at the Philharmonic Society in Boston and the New York Philharmonic. She subsequently had her own concert company and toured regularly in the United States, Canada, and abroad and was acknowledged as one of the preeminent violinists of the day. 1811 - Harriet Beecher Stowe was born today. She went on to become a famous writer. While she wrote at least ten adult novels, she is predominantly known for her first “Uncle Tom’s Cabin, begun as a serial for the Washington anti-slavery weekly called the “National Era”. It focused public interest on the issue of slavery and was very controversial. Stowe relied on her personal experience of slavery, the anti-slavery movement, and the underground railroad in her writings. She had seven children (of which only 3 survived). 1906 - Anne Morrow Lindbergh was born today in Englewood, New Jersey USA. After graduating from Smith College, she won the Mary Augusta Jordan Prize for the most original literary piece and the Elizabeth Montagu Prize for the best essay on women of the 18th Century. She also composed novels, essays and diaries. She later married aviator Charles A. Lindbergh and began flying. She became the first woman in the U.S. to obtain a glider pilot license. Subsequently, she received her private pilot’s license and covered 30,000 miles over five continents. She became the first woman to receive the National Geographic Society Hubbard Gold Medal for her piloting and navigational skills. She also continued to write and published 11 major works. 1763 - Josephine, Empress of France, was born today as Marie Rose Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie on the Caribbean island of Martinique to parents, Jose and Rose-Marie Tascher. She became a noted Parisian socialite after marrying Alexandre de Beauharnais, who was later guillotined and she imprisoned during the French Revolution. In 1796, she married Napoleon Bonaparte, a promising general whose rise soon made her Empress of France in 1804. She died, still popular with the public, in 1814. 1880 - Helen Keller was born today in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA. She was born with full sight and hearing until the age of 19 months old, when she developed a high fever and eventually became sight and hearing impaired. She was unable to communicate until she started schooling with Anne Sullivan. She went on to become a role model for millions of people and an inspiration to all by overcoming her disabilities as she worked unceasingly to bring awareness and improve the lives of people who were blind and deaf. She played a leading role in most of the significant social, political and cultural movements of the 20th Century. Women's History - June 28th
Today, I'm going to write about two very important events which occurred regarding women in the U.S. military. 1976 - Today, for the first time, women entered the U.S. Air Force Academy. The first class with women graduated in May 1980 and were nicknamed “80's Ladies”. However, it has not been an easy battle for women at the Academy. Twelve percent of women who graduated from the Academy in 2003 reported to have been victims of rape (or attempted rape), and it is estimated that about 20% of all women students were victims. Sexual predation was primarily directed toward freshmen and sophomores who were under 21 years of age. 1996 - South Carolina military school, The Citadel, votes to admit women rather than turn down public funding. Once an all-male military academy, The Citadel ended its opposition to enrolling female cadets with the U.S. Supreme Court decision which ruled that all-male enrollment policy at the Virginia Military Institute (another state supported school) was unconstitutional. The Citadel decision ends the 1993 controversy when high school student, Shannon Faulkner, won admission to the school by deleting from her school transcripts any reference to her gender. Once the school found out she was a female, they withdrew the admission offer, and Faulkner filed suit. Even though she won the lawsuit and was admitted, she left shortly thereafter due to heavy stress and isolation she experienced. 1930 - Oriana Fallaci was born today in Italy. She went on to become a famous journalist and was named Italy's most celebrated female writer. She is best known as an uncompromising political interviewer. Los Angeles Times writer Elizabeth Mehren called her “ the journalist to whom virtually no world figure would say no.” She has interviewed international celebrities and world leaders such as Henry Kissinger, Shah of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, Omar Khadafi, Yasir Arafat, Nguyen Van Thieu.....to just name a few. Today, at approximately midnight GMT, they took off from Lae and their destination was Howland Island. Their last positive position and sighting were over the Nukumanu Islands. 1873 – Frances Stern was born today and went on to become a nutritionist. She established the Frances Stern Nutrition Center in 1918, which was the first organization of its kind in the world. Most people did not understand the principles of nutrition in the early 1900s. Stern revolutionized nutritional education by using visual aids in her instruction, as she believed it is better to show rather than tell people how much they can eat. Women's History - July 4th
1868 - Today, Henrietta Leavitt was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She attended Radcliffe College and took an interest in astronomy. She volunteered at the Harvard College Observatory and was later appointed to the permanent staff, directed by Charles Pickering. She became head of the photographic photometry department, which studied photo images of stars to determine their magnitude. She discovered more than 2,400 variable stars, which led to her most important contribution to the field: the cepheid variable period-luminosity relationship. By observing certain class of “cepheids” she discovered a direct correlation between the time it took a star to go from bright to dim to how bright it actually was. 1755 - Sarah Siddons was born today in Wales. She went on to become an actress and was known for playing tragic heroines on the British Stage. She was famous for her role as Lady Macbeth and she was the first woman to play Hamlet ( a role she continued playing for 30 years). She was recognized by her deep, rich voice and dramatic gestures. 1867 - Maggie L .Walker was born today in Richmond, Virginia (USA), two years after the end of the Civil War. She was an African American who experienced the hardships of being a female and black. It was hard for her to find a job, but she got an education and graduated high school at the age of 16. She went on to become the first woman bank president in the United States. She also fought to improve the relations between the races and stood up for the rights of people often left out of decision making: African Americans, women, and children. Women's History - July 18th
1867 - Margaret Tobin Brown was born today in Missouri (USA). She was later referred to as “Molly Brown”, made famous by the 1960s musical, “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”. She was a “Titanic” survivor and was recognized for her heroism in assisting other survivors and getting people to safety by receiving the French Legion of Honor in 1932. She headed the Titanic Survivors’ Committee, which supported immigrants who had lost everything in the disaster. She assisted in getting a memorial erected to the Titanic survivors in Washington, D.C. Because she was a woman, she was not allowed to testify in Congressional hearings about the sinking of the Titanic, so she published her account of the sinking in newspapers. 1849 - Today, Emma Lazarus was born in New York City, N.Y. (USA). She went on to become a poet and, in 1869, she published her poem, “The New Colossus” for an auction at the Art Fund Exhibition for the Statue of Liberty. The poem fell into obscurity while the US waited for the Statue of Liberty, which was a gift from France called the “Liberty Enlightening the World”, in honor of two nations who gained independence through revolution. It is unknown how long it took to write “Wuthering Heights” or when it was written, and, in fact, some critics have argued that Branson Bronte (her brother) wrote it…however, most critics disagree with that. Women's History - July 31st
1833 - Today, Amelia Stone Quinton was born in Jamesville, New York. She went on to become an activist for Native American rights. Amelia, along with a friend, Mary Bonney (another activist for Native American rights) were both white women who were disturbed about pressure being put on the U.S. Congress to open Native American territory to white settlement. Amelia and Mary wrote a petition demanding the honoring of Native American treaties, and presented said Petition (with 13,000 signatures) to President Hayes and the House of Representatives. Amelia was both Secretary and organizer of an inter-denominational women’s committee which she helped create, wherein they began bringing awareness to everyone regarding the Native American rights issues. Subsequently, another petition, authored by Amelia, was presented, this time with 50,000 signatures, to the U.S. Senate by Henry L. Dawes of Massachusetts, where demands, such as a New Native American policy of education, legal equality, farm sized parcels of land to individual Native Americans were addressed, ultimately providing Native Americans with allotment and citizenship. This woman had more titles than “Carter has liver pills” (an old American expression for excess! ) She was known as Empress Matilda, Lady of the English (Holy Roman Empire, Germany), Imperatrix, Queen of the Romans, Romanorum Regina, Countess of Anjou, Matilda Augusta, Matilda the Good, Regina Anglorum, Domina Anglorum/Anglorum Domina, Angliae Normanniaeque Domina, and Queen of England (disputed). She fought for the title of heir to the throne of England in a bloody civil war against her cousin, Stephen. She signed documents using such titles as “Mathildis Imperatric Henrici Regis filia et Anglorum domina”.
