Women's History - April 2nd

1881 - Today, Clara Driscoll was born in St. Mary�s, Texas (USA). She went on to become a businesswoman, a philanthropist and historic preservationist. She was active and financially generous in political and civic affairs. She wrote two books � In the Shadow of the Alamo� (a collection of short stories) and a novel. �Mexicana� was a comedic opera she wrote which had a short run on Broadway in the early 1900s. In memory of her family, she set up the Driscoll Foundation. This foundation provided hospital and free clinic for sick and crippled children. Driscoll Children�s Hospital still operates in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Women's History - April 4th

1928 - Today, Maya Angelou (nee Marguerite Johnson) was born in St. Louis, Missouri (USA). She went on to become an American writer, a singer, an actress, a poet, a writer and an activist in the civil rights movement. She speaks many languages and her unique poetry spans the lines of race and captivates wide audiences. Her screenplay, �Georgia� was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, she was nominated for an Emmy for �Roots� (a miniseries) and was also nominated for a Tony Award for �Look Away�. She was the first African-American woman to be admitted to the Directors Guild of America (DGA).

Women's History - April 6th

1878 - Today, (Mary) Abastenia St. Leger Eberle was born in Webster City, Iowa (USA). She went on to become a famous portrait sculptor (primarily depicting children and fountains). Her work was drawn from her life observations on the streets of New York. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City.

Women's History - April 8th

1912 - Today, Sonja Henie was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway. She went on to become an Olympics figure skater winner in 1928, 1932 and 1936. She won more Olympic and world titles than any other ladies figure skater. Her skating routine helped to transform the sport of figure skating and increased its popularity. She went on to be known as �Pavlova of the ice�. In her youth, she was also ranked as Norway�s third best tennis player and was also a famous Hollywood movie actress.

Women's History - April 10th

1903 - Today, Clare Boothe Luce was born in New York City, NY (USA). She went on to become a socialite (married to Henry Luce who published Time, Life & Fortune magazines), she served in the U.S. Congress from 1942 to 1946, she was an ambassador to Brazil and Italy, she wrote plays, was a WWII war correspondent and wrote articles and reviews. She was famous for her wit. My favorite quote (because I find it to be so true) by her is: �Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, "She doesn't have what it takes." They will say, "Women don't have what it takes�. � Clare Boothe Luce

Women's History - April 12th

1898 � Today, Eleanor Glueck (nee Eleanor Touroff) was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. (USA). She went on to become a criminologist (Harvard Law School). Her studies on criminal behavior, physique (Physiognomy), family disruption and other such variables profoundly influenced the predictability of juvenile delinquency. She and her husband, Sheldon Glueck (also a criminologist and researcher who works with her) are known for the Glueck Social Prediction Table (a study which attempts to identify potential delinquents at age six and younger).

Women's History - April 14th

1840 - Today, Isabella Gardner (nee Isabella Stewart) was born in New York City, NY (USA). She went on to become an eccentric philanthropist and an art collector. She married financier, Jack Gardner, and her home became known for social affairs and a center for gatherings of painters, musicians, celebrities and other literary people. She and her husband created an art museum known as Fenway Court to house their valuable art collection and opened it to the general public.

Women's History - April 16th

1912- Today, Harriet Quimby becomes the first woman to fly across the English Channel, flying from the Cliffs of Dover to Hardelot, France. She was the first woman in the United States (and the second in the world) to obtain a pilot�s license.

Women's History - April 17th

1916 - Today, Sirimavo R. D. Bandaranaike was born. She went on to become the world�s first woman to hold the office of Prime Minister. She was (three times) prime minister of Sri Lanka. Subsequently, her daughter, Chandrika Kumaratunga, became President and then Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike

1969 - Also today, Bernadette Devlin was elected as British MP, becoming the youngest female MP at 21 years of age.   She took her seat in Westminster on her 22nd birthday and served from 1969 to 1974. She is known as a Northern Ireland republican political activist.

Women's History - April 18th

1959 - Today, Susan Faludi was born in Queens, New York. She went on to become an author and a journalist, but, most importantly, she became a professional feminist. She won a Pulitzer Prize for labor reporting for the Wall Street Journal. She�s well known for writing, �Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women� reflecting how feminism was blamed for many social problems.
