Women's History - April 1st

1776 - Today, Sophie Germain was born in Paris, France (EU). She went on to become a mathematician and number theorist. She was the first woman not related to a member by marriage to attend Academie des Sciences meetings and was the first woman invited to attend sessions at the Institut de France. Regarding her work on number theory, she made partial progress on a proof of Fermats last theorem. She showed that there could be no solutions relatively prime to the exponent, for prime exponents less than 100.

Women's History - April 2nd

1881 - Today, Clara Driscoll was born in St. Marys, Texas (USA). She went on to become a businesswoman, a philanthropist and historic preservationist. She was active and financially generous in political and civic affairs. She wrote two books In the Shadow of the Alamo (a collection of short stories) and a novel. Mexicana was a comedic opera she wrote which had a short run on Broadway in the early 1900s. In memory of her family, she set up the Driscoll Foundation. This foundation provided hospital and free clinic for sick and crippled children. Driscoll Childrens Hospital still operates in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Women's History - April 3rd

1929 - Today, Miyoshi Umeki was born in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan. She went on to become an actress and was the first (out of five Asian actors nominated) to win an Academy Award (Oscar) for best supporting actress in Sayonara in 1957. She was all of 5'1" tall (small). She came to the U.S. in 1955, after already being a famous actress in Japan (known as Nancy Umeki) and having several hit songs (she recorded for RCA Japan).   In 1959, she was nominated for Broadways Tony Award as best actress in the musical Flower Drum Song (in which she recreated her role in the film version in 1961). She also played the role of Mrs. Livingston in the TV series The Courtship of Eddies Father.

Women's History - April 4th

1928 - Today, Maya Angelou (nee Marguerite Johnson) was born in St. Louis, Missouri (USA). She went on to become an American writer, a singer, an actress, a poet, a writer and an activist in the civil rights movement. She speaks many languages and her unique poetry spans the lines of race and captivates wide audiences. Her screenplay, Georgia was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, she was nominated for an Emmy for Roots (a miniseries) and was also nominated for a Tony Award for Look Away. She was the first African-American woman to be admitted to the Directors Guild of America (DGA).

Women's History - April 5th

1614 - Today, Pocahontas married John Rolfe. She was known as the Indian Princess and her role was key to the survival of the early English settlement in Virginia.   Her father was Powhatan, the chief king of the Powhatan confederacy of Algonquin tribes in the region (Tidewater) of what became Virginia. Today, she married a tobacco planter (John Rolfe), who fell in love with her and asked permission of both her father (Powhatan) and Governor Dale to marry.

Women's History - April 6th

1878 - Today, (Mary) Abastenia St. Leger Eberle was born in Webster City, Iowa (USA). She went on to become a famous portrait sculptor (primarily depicting children and fountains). Her work was drawn from her life observations on the streets of New York. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City.

Women's History - April 7th

1915 - Today, Billie Holiday (nee Eleanora Fagan) was born in Baltimore, Maryland (USA). An African-American, she went on to become, what many considered to be, the greatest jazz vocalist of all time. During her difficult lifetime, she fought racism and sexism. Shes one of my all time favorites, together with Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald.

Women's History - April 8th

1912 - Today, Sonja Henie was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway. She went on to become an Olympics figure skater winner in 1928, 1932 and 1936. She won more Olympic and world titles than any other ladies figure skater. Her skating routine helped to transform the sport of figure skating and increased its popularity. She went on to be known as Pavlova of the ice. In her youth, she was also ranked as Norways third best tennis player and was also a famous Hollywood movie actress.

Women's History - April 9th

1939 - Today, Marian Anderson (an African American) sings in front of 75,000 people (plus more heard her on the radio) in a free concert at the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday. When the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) refused her permission to sing at Constitution Hall, Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the DAR in protest. Roosevelt then arranged for the federal government to sponsor this free concert by Anderson at the Lincoln Memorial.

Women's History - April 10th

1903 - Today, Clare Boothe Luce was born in New York City, NY (USA). She went on to become a socialite (married to Henry Luce who published Time, Life & Fortune magazines), she served in the U.S. Congress from 1942 to 1946, she was an ambassador to Brazil and Italy, she wrote plays, was a WWII war correspondent and wrote articles and reviews. She was famous for her wit. My favorite quote (because I find it to be so true) by her is: Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, "She doesn't have what it takes." They will say, "Women don't have what it takes. Clare Boothe Luce

Women's History - April 11th

1492 Today, Marguerite of Navarre was born. Her mother was Louise de Savoy and her father was Charles de Valois-Orleans, comte dAngouleme.   Marguerite went on to become Queen consort Henry IIof Navarre and a Renaissance writer (she was known as the First Modern Woman. She assisted in negotiating the Treaty of Cambrai a/k/a The Ladies Peace and in the release of her brother, King Frances I of France, when he was held captive in Spain.

Women's History - April 12th

1898 Today, Eleanor Glueck (nee Eleanor Touroff) was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. (USA). She went on to become a criminologist (Harvard Law School). Her studies on criminal behavior, physique (Physiognomy), family disruption and other such variables profoundly influenced the predictability of juvenile delinquency. She and her husband, Sheldon Glueck (also a criminologist and researcher who works with her) are known for the Glueck Social Prediction Table (a study which attempts to identify potential delinquents at age six and younger).

Women's History - April 13th

1891 Today, Nella Larson was born in Chicago, Illinois (USA) to a bi-racial couple (her mother was Danish and her father was a black man from West India (St. Croix). She went on to become the first African American woman to win the Guggenheim fellowship for creative writing - she wrote two novels which involved gender and racial identity issues (Passing and Quicksand), during the period known as Harlem Renaissance.   Regarding her third novel, Sanctuary, she was accused of plagiarism (which turned out to be false). Aside from being a writer, she was also a nurse and a librarian.

1840 - Today, Isabella Gardner (nee Isabella Stewart) was born in New York City, NY (USA). She went on to become an eccentric philanthropist and an art collector. She married financier, Jack Gardner, and her home became known for social affairs and a center for gatherings of painters, musicians, celebrities and other literary people. She and her husband created an art museum known as Fenway Court to house their valuable art collection and opened it to the general public.

Women's History - April 15th

1858 - Today, Millicent Washburn Shinn was born. She went on to become the first woman to receive a doctorate from the University of California at Berkley, and the 11th individual to be awarded a Ph.D at said university (educational psychology) with a dissertation in the new field of child study. She is known best for her studies of an infant (her niece) which she later published and became a popular book entitled, The Biography of a Baby. She published other books also on child growth and behavior patterns and developments.

1912- Today, Harriet Quimby becomes the first woman to fly across the English Channel, flying from the Cliffs of Dover to Hardelot, France. She was the first woman in the United States (and the second in the world) to obtain a pilots license.

Death of Lucie Aubrac. One of the most famous female in the French Resistance. She was also a distinguished human and women rights activist. She may be soon awarded the highest distinction the republic can give: being burried in the Pantheon.

1916 - Today, Sirimavo R. D. Bandaranaike was born. She went on to become the worlds first woman to hold the office of Prime Minister. She was (three times) prime minister of Sri Lanka. Subsequently, her daughter, Chandrika Kumaratunga, became President and then Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

1969 - Also today, Bernadette Devlin was elected as British MP, becoming the youngest female MP at 21 years of age.   She took her seat in Westminster on her 22nd birthday and served from 1969 to 1974. She is known as a Northern Ireland republican political activist.

2001 - Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon was sworn in on 23 April 2001 as Victorias 19th Chief Commissioner, and the first woman to lead a police force in Australia.
 
Ms Nixon brings to Victoria Police extensive policing experience and a strong educational background gained in Australia and overseas. She has received several prestigious awards and scholarships and is actively involved with a number of organisations.

1959 - Today, Susan Faludi was born in Queens, New York. She went on to become an author and a journalist, but, most importantly, she became a professional feminist. She won a Pulitzer Prize for labor reporting for the Wall Street Journal. Shes well known for writing, Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women reflecting how feminism was blamed for many social problems.
