I read Cywr's story from "Secret Britain" - basically a book describing British countryside and tourist landmarks. The French contigent was commanded by a American-Irish general and more than half of them were criminals.

According to the story the caps welsh women wore made them resemble grenadiers in the distance. So a dozen French surrendered. But that could have been just pure myth. The rest, some hundred in number, surrendered later to a British contigent after a few skirmishes.

Proud Catt basher since 1987.

IIRC, those women were armed with pitchforks or something.
The French were banking on the support of the locals, but some of them raided a house, and that pissed off the locals, and it sort of went downhill from there.

That invasion was more like a raid, it wasn't serious, and most of the soldiers were drunk.  Raiding south England was a very popular hobby in the 18th century.

Yes, from the scale of operations it was clearly intended to be a raid, designed to provoke a revolt that could eventualy allow for a staging point or a potential future invasion, bt if kind of backfired.

lol. It looks like I'm a bit behind.

I am Dave, 17 year old living in Virginia, USA. I wouldn't say that history is my academic focus, but it is one of my personal ones, and much of this interst is because of online history forums, beginning with HG's history forum that grew out from "off topic history threads" that started appearing in Age of King's forum. I've been at AE since the second month after its creation, and shortly afterwards, I started working on AE, which has been a most enjoyable experience to me.

I've been terribly lax in social form - my apologies...

It's good to be back - but at the rate I write it'll be years before I get my rank back.  I still think some of us should get extra points for length of posts...why don't longer posts count double?

And - having finally read all the introductions - I see that I am no longer the only oldie here - the ripe old age if 47 finally has some company.

Welcome to all the new folks - and welcome back to all the old ones - Looking forward to some great discussion.

In the time of your life, live - so that in that wonderous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it. (Saroyan)

LOL is it because of the stoic tone and confusing sentence structure in how I write?
