Women's History - March 18th
1922 - Today, the first American Bat Mitzvah was performed for the 12-year old daughter of Rabbi Mordecai M. Kaplan (founder of Reconstructionist Judaism), in what became a widespread American Jewish practice. Traditionally, in Jewish law, a girl reaches majority at age 12, but girls were not given any ritual ceremony as the boys ( who celebrate the ceremonial Bar Mitzvah). This first Bat Mitzvah celebrated for a girl was intended to give females equal standings with males. It also stimulated Jewish education for women so said Jewish knowledge is transmitted to their children.

1862 - Today, Laura Jean Libbey was born in Brooklyn, NY (USA). She went on to become a popular romance novelist and advice columnist in the late 1800s. She started by publishing short fiction stories in the newspaper, of a romantic nature. Her stories were melodramatic and sentimental tales of working-class girls who did well by marrying the men of their dreams. Today, they are known as romance novels (you know, like the ones in which Favio poses for the covers).

Women's History - March 27th
1945 - Today, Anna Mae Pictou Aquash was born in a village near Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, Canada. She went on to become a Mikmaq activist and the most active and prominent female member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) in the 70s. She was found murdered and some say that her being so outspoken is what ultimately killed her. Here is a small quote from this woman, whom I greatly admire for being so outspoken (at a time when most women were not -especially indigenous women) :
"These white people think this country belongs to them - they don't realize that they are only in charge right now because there's more of them than there are of us. The whole country changed with only a handful of raggedly-ass pilgrims that came over here in the 1500s. And it can take a handful of raggedy-ass Indians to do the same, and I intend to be one of those raggedy-ass Indians." ...Anna Mae Pictou
