I thought Samarkand was an important city on the Silk Road?

Samarkand was definitely part of the classical Silk Road route.  Cyrus' list is probably some modern list.

Its modern all right. All of the cities stated are important modern cities. Back then then, many weren't as important. While Xing Jiang wasn't aprovince during the time of the old silk road.

Today, the two major cities you MUST visit to get a feel for the Old Silk Road is Samarkand in Uzbekistan and Kashgar in Xinjiang, China.
