The first one was the original Turuk empire built on the remnants of the Juan Juan in 552 ad.. The second is a revival empire Bilge Han presided over around the 720's.

Here is a thorough link on both:

There are no records from within the Turk empires.  The Chinese historians mention them when they were involved in Chinese affairs but we have little else to go on.  As with all these steppe 'empires'  the Turk was a loose confederation so a change of 'empire' doesn't necessaraly mean great changes in the actual peoples etc..

? where did this drivel come from ?

We don't know much because there are very few written records.  Internal written records of the "steppe empires" didn't really start until the Uighur, and most of them were lost in the general destruction of the new towns after the Kirgiz and Naimen destroyed Uighur power.

Dr Gumilyov's work is a little dated and many modern readers dislike it becaus in includes strong anti Jewish elements (not uncommon for the period).  It has the advantages of being by a Russian (almost all the archeology is Russian), not having much competition, and is transklated into Turkish (but not English).
