on the exact place whose center is the crossroads of East and West, of
Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, of Christianity and Islam, of
Austrian boulevards and Ottoman shops, of modern skyscrapers and
European squares.
The transition from East to West is much more than a metaphor; in Sarajevo, it is literal, geographical process. From the Ottoman East with it's magnificent mosques and Oriental architecture, through the Austrian Center with it's proud churches and European architecture, to the modern West with it's towering buildings and wide highways. "In this valley, an amazing alchemy of cultures and religions merges into a single one - yet, each keeps something of its character and is recognizable for what it is. Light from the same source passes through the stained glass windows of the Katedrala, illuminates the gem that is Begova Mosque, lights of the central chandeleir of the Church of the Lord's Holy Transfiguration, and caresses the ancient Soloman's Seal, the Star of David. Nevertheless, it is all one whole, which could hardly be modified in any way. The photos are from 2002-2005. Everything you see was destroyed to some degree. The city was hit with 3400 bombs every day for 3.5 years - the longest siege in recorded human history. Here are a few photographs from the war:   The UNITIC Towers, which have since been rebuilt:  The Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is the last major skyscraper to be repaired in the city:     ------------- |

You misunderstood me.  The pictures are all from 2002-2005, they're
taken after the photographs of the war, which were taken in 1992-1995.Everything was destroyed, but most of it has been rebuilt. Which is what the first post shows.  ------------- |

but those two burning buildings looks so much like the glass once above. anyway iam so glad that sarajevo looks so beautifull and looking forward to visit it one day. wish you the best.

Azimuth: They are the same glass buildings. The picture of them
burning is from 1992. The picture of them rebuilt is from 2004.  It's
really not that complicated, it's just my English, I guess.CokGec: Yes, it's the Olympic Cemetery. It used to be a football pitch and tennis courts, part of the Zetra Olympic Stadium. The Serbian army shelled funerals and cemeteries as well, which were mainly on the edges of the city, so it wasn't safe to bury people properly. Most families just burried them at their homes, or in public parks, and so on. The Olympic Cemetery is mainly a Christian cemetery. Most of those killed in the bombings in this area were Christians. ------------- |

I have visited Sarajevo (July-August 2003), and indeed it is a very interesting city, characterised by an architectonic mixture of austrian and ottoman imperial styles, and with some modern buildings too. I found the city very inspiring, actually it made me write (a lot). But the most interesting were the people...specially the girls
Sad thing those cemeteries spread all over the city, but anyway life goes on now. With my bosnian friends we used to go also in clubs and bars of Sarajevo, but now i can remember only CentralCafe...
Anyway, beautiful city.
But I can see no link with Jerusalem, Sarajevo cannot be else, but European Sarajevo, with its own history and identity! ------------- Prej heshtjes...! |

I didn't call it the European Jerusalem, it's been known as such for
centuries. The oldest reference I know of is from the 1500s.

Hi Mila! Great post ! I figure I contribute to this wonderful thread with photos I found on another forum (Illyria). The photos were taken summer of 2006 and they were take by artist/photographer named Mirza (or mizi?) Causevic, a native of Sarajevo who lives in states now.
