An artifact found in Chan Chan, Peru, attributed to the Chimu, is nearly identical to the "soup can" device known to children as a "string phone".

Just shows they had an imagination. Dunno fer sure. But it's not hard to imagine some slickassed priest rigging this gadget to allow someone to speak directly to "the gods", for an appropriate fee of course.
