Like most I felt it was an accident at the time...but further research indicates other possibilities. Is it a case of an honest man who revealed much during Congressional investigations? Disgruntled employees who lost their jobs because of this? A case of a man who knew to much? Or all of the above.

Only the dead man knows for sure.

As I recall, neither. He was found in his boat or something like that.

He is alleged to have drowned while rowing at night near his home.

The physical evidence and physical location of his body, and more, after a lengthy search; does not necessarily support this.

suicide was proposed by a son iirc later...but it don't wash either. more than likely it was a hit by disgruntled employees or the agency itself.

And yes mental screening for intel services positions is a mandatory and can be an exhaustive process depending on the level of access. His was the very top. it can also be a regular process ie. annually or event driven specific reaction.

Acutaly they were novices who learned quckily; as much was acquired frim the NKVD-KGB-Surete-Mossad and MI6.

Which is to say the possibility of eradication of an 'in house' prob was never and remains never not new for any intel agency.

International 'intel agendas' and their operational security, secrecy, and culpable deniability, which drive international and national real politik remains a dangerous field of endeavor.

Spooks don't want leaks period. Bad press is not what they can accept willingly.
