In 1844, Henry Clay was nominated by the Whigs against James K. Polk, the Democratic candidate.    
Polk won by 170 to 105 electoral votes.    
Clay had opposed annexing Texas on the grounds that it would bring the issue of slavery to the forefront of the United States' political dialog.    
Suppose Henry Clay had won the Presidential Election of 1844. What happens then?
