The practice of members of the Royal Families lending their names to organizations through formal patronages is thought to have existed since the 18th century.
The first recorded patronage of Great Britain was King George II's involvement with the Society of Antiquaries.
The Society of Antiquaries is an organization concerned with architecture and art history, conservation and heraldry.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is involved with more than twenty patronages.
These include Maternity Worldwide, the Christmas Seal Foundation, the Danish Nest Show, and the Danish Refugee Council.

I recollect an Alexandra Day, set up shortly before WWI to celebrate Queen Alexandra the wife of Edward VII. She was a very popular consort, and flowers were sold on this day to raise money for hospital charities.

These are examples of relatively 'modern forms' of patronage. But it's far older than the 18th ce.

The Festival of Trees event is an annual fundraiser. It is staged in London's Natural History Museum. It aims to raise money for the Save the Children Fund.

Queen Maxima of The Netherlands is patron of the Dutch Orange Fund (The Oranje Fonds).
The "Oranje Fonds" was created in 2002. In the year it was founded, the Fund merged with the Juliana Welfare Fund, which has been active in the social sector since 1948.
