The Seven Weeks' War broke out on June 7th, 1866, between Prussia and Austria; it was the result of a quarrel over which power would claim the former Danish duches of Holstein and Schleswig. The result was one of the most decisive victories in pre-20th Century European warfare - the Prussians inflicted 40,000 casualties while taking around 10,000 themselves. A peace treaty was finally signed at Prague's Blue Star Hotel on August 23rd. Not unlike the American Civil War that had ended the year before, and the soon-coming Franco-Prussian War, the Seven Weeks' War represented a transitional phase in how warfare was conducted. The Prussians used more open formations as well as more modern weaponry such as the Dreyse needle-gun. They also made more effective use of the railroad and the telegram to coordinate their forces. |

 During the Austro-Prussian War the Austrians were still using muzzle-loading muskets like this one. Not surprisingly, they were decimated by the better-armed Prussians ------------- Me Grimlock not nice Dino! Me bash brains! |
