This is interesting: a suit of armor made for a 5ft Japanese warrior woman has recently come up for auction. I've heard of ninja girls infiltrating and assassinating rival warlords (usually with poison), but never of women fighting in open battle:

Female warriors seem to be more widespread than i first thought. No doubt the wives of besieged samurai preferred death in battle over widowhood or rape

Good link Alani Dragon. I knew about the Boshin War, but the rest was news to me. Somewhere I remember a woodblock of a battle on a bridge between Boshin female forces and the emerging Japanese Imperial Army.
