Brilliant. Unorthodox in his orthodoxy. A truly gifted mechanical engineer, physicist and inventor.  Later to be a long time foe of Thomas Edison and an eccentric beyond question. Often times referred to as American 'forgotten' scientist. He remains a pivotal figure, to this day, in theorems bordering on physics and conspiracy...to ufos and his much vaunted 'death ray'. A better then average bio on him can be found here: Tesla Life and Legacy  http://www.pbs.org/tesla/ll/index.html - http://www.pbs.org/tesla/ll/index.html

Genius, but unable to manage his own finances or his own life.  But he gave us most of the modern electronics we have today.

How much of what we know concerning this man is fact versus fiction? I am specifically referencing the incidents after he died, the FBI and the Govt raiding his files, as well as the purported 'super' inventios of his?

Only "unreal idea" of this man was wireless transportation of energy cause of lack of technology Okamido.
In fact he transfered it with lot of losses.Idea is 21'th century tech idea.Transfer of energy trough air causes lot of losses:Canadians made lot of plane drones, but loses were over 50%...That's mu area!Vacuum promises more of it:no losses at all, except inside transformers,Sender&Receiver of energy. There are microwaves tubes.Coaxial cable is one of them.Others can be vacuumed total.Sender&Receiver units for high frequency are under development.GaAs promises a lot:New power transistors for it Russians have had after fall of SSSR.Maybe long time before it.USA has cloned it till now.Other gadgets:AC/DC Motors&Generators&Transformers are still functional! This man is the Hammer more than Adze!

Both Tesla and Edison when asked where they got their ideas from, both said, from the "ether".  Was this their way of saying "out of thin air" or was there something else here that we don't have an understanding of.

Tesla actually built a prototype transmission tower somewhere on Long Island NY.  The main problem was funding.  Edisons process was being more widely recieved and Tesla's backing dried up.

A musing, isn't Radio a means of broadcasting energy? You have a transmitter that's putting out say 100,000 watts of RF energy that has a signal imprinted within it. The recievers pick up the energy and read the signal.  Could this have been a spinoff of one of Tesla's ideas?

In its simplest definition yes rw's are energy...specifically 'em' radiation with waves and pulses longer then infrared. But it takes antennas, tuners and the process or application of a resonator to either occupy or transmit and receive a signal in or on an appropriate rw band....for it to become a practical tool.

As to whether it was a spin off? According to the sources yes... as Tesla understood it based on the creation and effects of his coil. And applied for the American patent on a transmission device and was granted the same in 1900. Four years later the decision was reversed and Marconi (whom btw was a close friend of Tesla) was given the patent. The mystery today, in part, still remains as to why.

ntl...both were the recipients of the brilliance of the Scot's theoretical physicist James C. Maxwell. And whose work laid the basis for the understanding of the phenomena of the electromagnetic field and the radiations within.
