| I've been pretty much a lurker here for some time, but I hope you don't mind if I pose a question to the community. The other thread here has made me curious: How many of you frequently read historical magazines? If so, what sort of magazines do you read? Popular or scientific? Focussed on a specific period, or across many periods? |

I think you will find a broad interest range here. We have a core group of highly intelligent, well educated folks. Oh I've been insulted on this forum, but as yet those doing so I know are a lot less intelligent than I, so I ignore them.
I buy the odd edition of the BBC's History Magazine when something catches my eye. ------------- What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture. |

I try to keep up with NatGeo, though I'm not sure if it can be seen as historical magazine nowadays. I used to receive Smitsonian and Civil War News, but I have limited space to store, so now I get them from the library. I like the "Historical Reviews" magazine I get from the military base library. But in general I research by subjects, so when I get into something I search through the net and Questia, this works for me better that reading one magazine from the beginning to the end.

So it seems people tend to go for the magazines with a broad focus and pick and choose from that what they like (as well as the internet)? Are there any people who read more focussed magazines? For example, I regularly read a magazine specifically about warfare in the ancient world.

Besides the Civil War News, nothing specific when it comes to history. The net is easier and faster to research, and one has only so many hours in a day. I used to cut and save articles from NatGeo etc, and make an archive juts in case I need the info one day - but now NatGeo has an online archive, and to save space I ditched mine who knows where in deep storage. I also like Popular Archeology, but I rather follow it online, for the same reasons.

My ole pard nails it..... I have over four thousand links to information sites..journals..magazines..newspapers..periodicals and history and science sites. Don't have a favorite. Read it all. Study it all. Once.. mythologies were a favorite..that led to famous explorers..that led to science and the history of exploration which led to soldiers; which I became. That in turn led to higher education and teaching which I have done... (leading to writers and prose and public speaking) which I dabble in. Then came then the oil production industry. Then my own consulting company..then as a volunteer on battlefield and historical research projects. Then wham bang... when ya think ya done it all...ya return to your roots and occasionally make a living teaching city people how to survive in the desert or ya smell cow poop as a cattle and stock appraiser.
