Caedmon was a shepherd employed by the Benedictine monks of Whitby Abbey during the Dark Ages. He was a contemporary of Abbess Hilda, niece of King Edwin. Initially a shy, illiterate man, Caedmon had a dream which he translated into a magnificent poem glorifying God. This was the start of his long and distinguished career as a poet although few of his works survive

Quite the character. Bede remains the primary source.
Which one can rely on or reject as no other contemporary source to his life exists iirc. I have not reviewed the Historia ecclesiastica in many a year. Consequently, inference, innuendo and oral tradition that became written; is either acceptable or not.

I generally stand with Bede.

In my second year at primary school we did a play about Caedmon. I played his pet cow

Mine was The Merchant of Venice; an odd choice given the location: North Texas. But the drama-poetry-creative writing teacher was a lovely and kind lady from Virginia.

I became Antonio, when I wanted Bassanio. As at the tender age of 14, I was in love with the girl who played Portia.

She became a woman's physical fitness educator and coach (somehow she went from a perceived svelte 100 pounds of blonde, blue eyed beauty, to around 165; solid muscle and a female shot putter-still cute).

I became a soldier.  The rest.... remains now but memories.

    Now [we] must honour
    the guardian of heaven,
    the might of the architect,
    and his purpose,
the work of the father of glory
    — as he, the eternal lord,
    established
    the beginning of wonders.
    He, the holy creator,
first created heaven as a roof
    for the children of men.
    Then the guardian of mankind
    the eternal lord,
    the Lord almighty
    afterwards appointed
    the middle earth,
    the lands, for men.

What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.
