That is very good, I'm really interested to read about the history of Lativa, of course about the ancient times but I have not yet found much info, I think "The Chronology" section of your site is very incomplete about ancient Latvia.

Thanks!
Ancient Latvia times or Prehistoric times in Latvia goes to the end of 12. century when Crusaders came. I have article about Prehistory, about all four tribes- Curonians, Semigallians, Latgalians, Selonians and Finno-Ungarians- the Livonian tribe and the article about early Latvian statehood. There is noting special to write in Chronology about Prehistory since there is no written recordings about events back then, only archeological findings, only some viking raids in 9.-10. century and viking sagas who cannot be fully trusted. There could be more to write about Prehistoric Latvia , but I am not very skilled in this period. I scored 6 in Prehistoric Exam and 7 in Prehistoric Seminary and 7 in History in Ancient World therefore I lack understanding at this point. What I could say until 12. century Latvia was a backward place, there was no stone buildings or other goods that Europe had. Only ties with other Europe was with Scandinavians and Russians. But German Crusaders were the ones who brought Western Culture with fire and sword but took Latvian freedom for 700 years. So I took more attention on Crusades but you can find something about Prehistoric age I have tag cloud there they should show some articles about pre-Crusader period.

There is a discussion about the people who have been called Saklab in the Persian and some Arabic sources in another thread, as you can read in this thread: http://www.allempires.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=25287 - World, according to a Persian book (10th century) , we know Saklab were a people who lived somewhere in the east of Europe, it is widely believed that Saklabs were the same Slavs but as I said http://www.allempires.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=27410&PN=4&PID=628446#628446 - here : "It is possible that Saklabs and Slavs were really different peoples and these names are just similar to each other."

I think Saklabs lived in a more northern, one possible thing is that they were the same Skalvians: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skalvians - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skalvians  a Baltic tribe who lived in the west of Latvia and lithuania:

As you read in that Persian book, it talks about Kurz near Saklab, a people named Kurzi or Kurzian have been also mentioned in the Persian books, they could be the same Curonians: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curonians - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curonians  as you read it says they were called Kurs and their land Kurzeme, anyway the book says that in the east of it are the Rus and Volga Bulgaria, that seems to be true about modern Latvia.

The book also says about Saklab: " اين ناحيتي است بزرگ و اندر وي درختان سخت بسيار است " it means "that is a large region and there is deep forests", "و ايشان اندر ميان درختان نشسته اند" "and people of this region live among the trees", I have asked some questions in another thread:  When the author of the book says the title of the kings of Saklab is "Svit", does he mean "Sviat" like in Sviatoslav? "Svit" is similar to "Swede", could it be related to Swedes? Is it also true that their daily diet was "milk" (طعام ملوک ايشان شير است)? Their palaces were underground in the winter (همه بزمستانها اندر کازه ها و زيرزمينها باشند)? There were a large number of forts and citadels (ايشان را قلعه ها و حصارهاي بسيار است)? People wore mostly linen clothes (جامه ايشان بيشتر کتان است)? (The Persian word for linen is Katan, similar to cotton), They were all fire-worshippers (همه آتش پرستند)? ....

I tried to find this source in my books about Latvian Prehistory, but found nothing and in web too, I have book about Arabian connections with Latvia somewhere I just can't find it. If that could be true that is unique source where Baltic tribes are mentioned. I could be possible because, what I know in Numismatics there is a large quantity of coins from Arabian Caliphate and many traders from Scandinavia came to Middle East from river Daugava and Neuma where Skalvian lived.

What do you know about Sarmatians? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarmatians - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarmatians  As you read, they were an Iranian people who lived in the eastern Europe, the ancient name of the Baltic Sea was Sarmatian Ocean ("Oceanus Sarmaticus" in Latin) or "Mare Sarmaticum" -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Sea - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Sea

This site: http://www.network54.com/Forum/5317/viewall-page-38 - http://www.network54.com/Forum/5317/viewall-page-38  says that Sarmatians could be a Baltic tribe, it says the word "Sarma" in Latvian means "Rime, Frost" and Sarmaitis could mean "Son of Sarma", that is really a good etymology for a people who lived in a cold land but the intersting thing is that "Sarma" exactly means "Frost" in Persian and some other Iranian languages too, it more exactly means "Cold": http://www.windictionary.com/Persian-english-sarm_00e2-Default.aspx - http://www.windictionary.com/Persian-english-sarm_00e2-Default.aspx  an opposite of "Garma" which means "warm": http://www.windictionary.com/persian-english-garm_00e2-Default.aspx - http://www.windictionary.com/persian-english-garm_00e2-Default.aspx

I know Sarmatians but newer heard that they could be Balts I have not read such statements in Latvian sources.  Yes "Sarma" means Frost in Latvian, but because Baltic languages are part of Indo-European group many words with Iranian or Ancient Indian language the Sanskrit are common. Some people in Latvia and Lithuania even think that first Balts lived in Himalayas and came all the way from there to Baltic region. However most historians agree that Baltic ancestors came from west chasing  reindeer migration to north. Latvian language is formed from ancient Latvian, German and Russian components we got many words that are not common in other languages in Europe
http://www.e-mistika.lv/?txt=591 - http://www.e-mistika.lv/?txt=591 Here in the tables you can see that many Latvian traditional words are common with Sanskrit. Lithuanian language are more authentic than Latvian because they were less influenced by other nations (they had giant kingdom all the way from Baltic sea to Black sea for some time).

I believe Baltic languages have a common with Iranian and Ancient Indian languages somehow because Baltic language  tree differs from other German, Latin or Slavic trees. There is also common thought that Slavic language has connection with Balts, because Baltic tribes lived in today Russian territory all the way to present day Moscow. Slavs assimilated those Baltic tribes and probably kept some Baltic words in their own language.
