Iranian women still struggle to gain basic rights and dignity, despite arrests of women activists.   Shirin Ebadi (an Iranian lawyer and Nobel peace prize winner) has written to the U-N High Commissioner for Human Rights demanding an investigation. She says, “ Campaigning to end discriminatory laws should not send a woman to jail.” Even though the majority of university students in Iran are females, they are not treated as equally as men upon entering the workforce. According to this article, women in Iran are not allowed to travel without a male relative’s consent, they cannot run for president, they are not allowed to be judges and the so-called immoral behavior is meted out unevenly to women. In an attempt to change these laws, the women’s petition drive commenced in 2006, which brought about the recent violence and jailing of Iranian women activists. Why is it so difficult for the Iranian government to at least grant these women a few of the rights they request in an effort to participate in some sort of amicable negotiation? Why are they so stubborn? Why do they fear the advancement of women’s status in their country? The fact is that these women are not requesting anything more than the basic rights already given to men. So what’s the problem here? I don’t get it!
