I've been trying to find relevant information on the net without having to resort to asking someone who is ethnically Korean in person--it is a sensitive question after all.  As it turns out, there was one article on the subject, but that has to do with the immigration of Chosonjok from China to South Korea with an emphasis on their inability to assimilate economically.

Now the Question: Other than economics/emigration, is there any other reason for such ethnic tension, i.e., some historical event in the Chosun period that has caused such animosity?

I know its a sensitive question, so please, a straightforward answer and explanation will suffice without having to resort to a debate [my intention is to seek understanding, not a debate: I just want to make it clear on that].
