I'm curious about the food eaten by historical Mongol groups and in current day Mongolia.   I went to a restaurant here in Canada last week (Mongolian Village) and it was pretty much just like chinese food.  On the menu it said that horseriders of the Mongolian (sic?) empire would chop vegetables and fry them on their shield over fires.

I was under the impression, from my cousin who lives in Mongolia, that Mongolian food is much more cheese/curds-oriented and not particularly heavy on the vegetables.   So, does anyone know anything about this?

Mongols consume a lot of meat...It is in their culture...Nomadic people of the Central Asia feed themselves by meat and primary products of livestock...Even the traditional drink of Central Asia is horse milk...

On a steppes forum, a Mongol member posted this:

Haha, hence why I haven't yet visited my cousin there, because I am a strict vegetarian..
(aside from the huge costs of travel.)

My friend mocked me and said "Mongolian" grills are common, that it just refers to the round table they fry things on.

I believe they once used a lot of yak butter. It has been proven that a protein rich diet was necessary for an arctic climate. I have heard they also ate a sort of moss (spagnam grass) for their vegies.
