I know this painting of Lord Byron, but I didn't know that he was portraid in an albanian costume. Many of those customes seems simillar with the ones that we have in Greece and with some that I saw in Bulgaria. -------------  Give me a place to stand and I will move the world.

A quick search on google didnt bring any results to me when i used "Byron Greek Dress" In fact the painting is known worldwide as "A portrait of Lord Byron in Albanian dress", by Thomas Phillips. ------------- Prej heshtjes...! |

These Albanese people were called " Albanian Ballists " that protected the Ottoman Palace and Governmental places in centre.
Turkish "Efe"s who were somewhat regional kingpins wandering with their gangs in mountains , should promise to fulfill the mountains with Albanian graveyards :)
Strange .

Probably due to the fustanelle. It was/is commonly used by people in the southern Balkans along with the more northern parts, albeit in a more distinct form. The version used by Albs and Greeks was essentially identical except that the Greek version was usually shorter.
The issue over who started or created it still remains controversial. lol |

Perhaps this picture should get some background info. The person in the front(near the right) was Resneli Niasi Bey, and he was an Albanian originated officer in the Ottoman empire who agreed to bring Albanian troops on the side of the young-Turks in exchange for cultural autonomy for Albanians. The photo here was taken in Monastir(Bitola), modern FYROM. |

this pictures were published in the "NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC" 1931.
This is the town of Berat.
My guess would be this women is from Shkodra (Scutari)
This two guys are from the south,probably from town of Lushnje.

This are from Balli Kombetar (National front) who colaborated mainly with the Nazis during WWII.they were not in big numbers and were uterly crashed by the Partisans who won the war and were latter persecuted by the Comunist regime.

 Partizans enter a destroyed Tirana victorious.Note the way they are saluting,at the begining Partizans in Albania were lead by the Democratic front,who wanted Albania to become democratic after the war,but Comunists won the next general elections,persecuted many of the real leaders of the war,turned the country into e dictatorship,and twisted the historical events into sain that the war was won by comunists,when in fact it was won by an aliance of many,including comunists,and mainly by villagers who did not really have any political afiliation exept fighting a foreigner in their land.Latter the salute was made with a fist ,and not the way it is in this picture.Pictures with this salute showing the real liberators of Tirana were hunted down and destroyed,but as we can see many of them resisted and remain to this day to bring truth into light.
