They are a Slavic people who have mostly been Germanized over the past 700 years, though mostly in the 20th century. There are now under 100k Sorbs who speak their Slavic tounge.

One theory suggests that the Serbs and the Sorbs may have been one large Slavic tribe under an Iranic elite caste until they broke off and the Serbs went into the Balkans. This is probably not correct, but it is interesting.

In addition to the points made by Herscel, the Sorbs are the furthest Western slavic people.  I think that only four small villages where the  language / culture is used on an everyday basis.  Two of these villages are Catholic and the other two are Protestant.
