WHO is SHE?

Whoever guesses correctly can then make an attempt to outsmart everyone else. One a woman is correctly identified, I will post a short bio of her and her accomplishments in an additional thread - if the person who submitted her would rather do this themselves, just let me know.

Here is my first attempt:

She was a talented mathematician in her own right but only those with a particular interest in her would know anything about her other than the identity of her husband. WHO is SHE?

All right!!! I am NOT posting this picture for her sexiness.  Usually one does not match the face of an inventor with this face, but yes, folks, she was famous for inventing something.

Electrical engineers and military technicians all around the world revere her as the co-inventor of a very important technology.

Besides being a co-inventor, she is also ground-breaking in history for another type of achievement, one less feminist.

Questions:

1. What is the technology that she helped to co-invent?
2. What was her somewhat less feminist, but groundbreaking, achievement? (think film!  Benito Mussolini refused to sell his copy of something related to her groundbreaking act.)
3. Who is she?

Hint: Her first husband was a German Nazi armament manufacturer, whom she fled from.  Her other husbands included a lawyer, an actor, a Texas oilman, a nightclub owner, and a screenwriter.

Today, in many science and engineering circles, she is seen as a reminder that women of extraordinary beauty also have brains to match!

Yep! Hedy Lamarr.  She co-invented the frequency hopping technique, commonly used nowdays in military technology.  She was also groundbreaking for posing nude and faking an orgasm - much earlier than Meg Ryan - in the 1931 film Extase, which was notorious back then.

Here goes my 1000 post in AE and I'm dedicating it to one of the most influential modern women in the world today (she has been named as one of China's most influential women. Her blend of Chinese heritage and U.S. education and business experience has provided her with a unique skill - she negotiates with her local Chinese government and is just as comfortable negotiating with U.S. based companies. She is responsible for the music network growth in China and has done more than most to narrow the cultural divide between East and West. WHO IS SHE?

Let's see if you know this woman.

She is a french singer and actress. Born 1917 in Bordeaux, France.
A hint: she sang "Il n'y a pas d'amour heureux" in the famous french film 8 women (8 femme) 2002.

OMG, Maziar, this is a no-brainer for me. One of my brothers is an avid foreign film watcher, and this actress is one of his all-time favorites. He raved about her in 8 Femmes. Her name is Danielle Darrieux and she was a hot commodity in her day! She did some American films too. She played the part of Olympias in "Alexander the Great" with Richard Burton and "The Rage of Paris" with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. She was also in the musical "Coco", where she replaced Katherine Hepburn, based on the life of Coco Chanel. She was also married to the famous playboy, Porfirio Rubirosa.

She was young, and pretty, and innocent. American soldiers broke into her home, murdered her father, her mother, and her 5 year old sister in cold blood. They then stripped her naked, raped her for hours, and then shot her in the head before burning her lower body-specifically her vaginal parts- so that no semen or fluids could be traced back to the perpetrators.

Who was she?

She was a child of Iraq.

She was a daughter of Iraq.

She was the honor of a Muslim Iraq. Her name was Abeer Qasim Hamza.

She was 15 and she was a martyr of Iraq.

Well in black and white photos she kind of looked younger. Alot of the colour photos you see of her are stills off home movies. This could maybe distort her image/age a bit. Or she had ton of stress being with hitler which adds age.

I never realized she was that young actually. I thought she was in her late 30s or early 40's heh.

This is what I consider to be a strong and determined woman! She founded a leading organization in Afghanistan (meant to give voice to the deprived and silenced women of Afghanistan), and launched a feminist magazine in 1981. She represented the Afghan resistance movement at the French Socialist Party Congress, where she started waiving a victory sign. Unfortunately, she was assassinated (one year after her husband’s assassination) by (some say) fundamentalist Mujahideen leader, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, fearing the love and respect she was creating from her people. She brought awareness of the women’s movement and is considered a martyr by some. Who is she?

WOW, I'm amazed that no one was able to identify this woman. Well, here's the answer:

She is..... Meena Keshwar Kamal also referred to as the "Heroine of Afghanistan" and founder of RAWA (Revolutionary Association for the Women of Afghanistan).

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar was the CIA's favorite mujahideen commander. He was referred to by CIA cheifs as "our blue-eyed mujahid".

Hekmatyar was given refuge by the Iranian regime after he became an ally of Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.

The Iranian regime also gave refuge to Hazara (Shia) and Tajik (Shia) leaders, most notably, Ismail Khan of Herat, southwestern Afghanistan. Iran was also the biggest supporter of the mujahideen in Bosnia and sent thousands of fighters and guns to the Bosniaks. Are you saying that the Iranians should not support their co-religionists, Mazier? If Iran did not support the Bosniaks during the Balkan War, then they would have been completely annihilated.

Also, isn't one of bin Laden's many sons living in or around Tehran, Iran now?

Mazier, I don't know where you came across the idea that Iran was harboring Hekmatyar who is a Pashtun Sunni Muslim. His supporters are the Pashtuns and other Sunni Afghans who live in southern Afghanistan and the tribal areas of northwestern Pakistan (where some 31.5 million Afghans of Pashtun and Baloch ethnicity reside.)

Mazier jaan,

The western parts of Pakistan, i.e. Baluchistan, the North West Frontier Province, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas are all AFGHAN areas. 18.99% of Pakistan's population is of Iranic/Iranian descent and these are not refugees, their lands were given by the British when Pakistan was formed in 1947 and the Durand Line expired in 1993 and these areas of Pakistan were to go back to Afghanistan and Iran, respectively.

Afghans living in Afghanistan: 31.056 million

Afghans (largely Pashtun and Baloch) living in Pakistan: 31.50 million

Hence, the reason Hekmatyar enjoys so much support in Pakistan and not Iran (which is largley Shia).

Ahem, now that I have all of your attention:

This is another brave and strong woman which I highly respect and support. At only 27 years of age, she is the feminist voice in her country and is considered to be the most famous woman of her country. She fears being assassinated, like all the other outspoken women before her, and she knows her mission can get her killed, to which she responds, “They will kill me but they will not kill my voice because it will be the voice of all women of [my country].” I admire her when she says, “ I am not better than any of the others, but I am young and energetic and the women of [my country] need me.”   Every country needs strong women like this one!

Who is she?

Well, she is another women's rights activist from Afghanistan. The more I read about these strong women from Afghanistan, the more impressed I am with them. These are women that risk death for their cause, and yet they are willing to take that chance in order to keep the women's issue on the agenda. My hat goes off to them and I wish them much success!

Her name is MALALAI JOYA

She was born in 1582, of Angoloan descent and was a member of Jagas (an ethnic militant group against Portuguese slave traders). She waged war, as a military leader, against European slave hunters. Totally devoted to the resistance movement, she formed alliances with other foreign powers to free Angola of European influence. Her struggle helped awaken others that followed her and forced them to mount offensives against invaders, including the mother of the great Zulu warrior Chaka; Madame Tinubu of Nigeria, Kaipkire of the Herero people of South West Africa, and the female army that followed the Dahomian King, Behanzin Bowelle.

She was born in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany in 1872. She was known by some to be obstinate, cold and withdrawn, but also known by others to be loyal to her country and family. Her brother died of hemophilia and, three years later, her mother and sister died from diptheria. She became engaged in Coburg, Germany to a famous Russian, and married him for love, even though their families didn’t agree. They were married for 23 years and had five children. The empire rejoiced with a 301 cannon salute at the birth of the heir to the throne (the only son they had). She ruled with her famous Russian husband, but they were disliked by certain groups. Ultimately, thinking she was posing for a photograph, they were assassinated.
