Topic: Russian Empire in colour Posted: 17-Feb-2006 at 04:52 |
I've posted this here before on the older incarnations of AE, but here we go again
OK, background story, some Russian guy back in the begining of the
1900s divised a way of capturing colour imaegs, namely by taking three
photos of the same thing through three different coloured filters.
These would then be superimposed ontop of each other with a special
projector to create the illusion of a colour image.
The pictures were eventualy forgotten and left in some old archive
somewhere untill a few years ago when they were rediscovered, restored
and made into digital images.
The links contain the details, as well as the name of the 'Russian guy'
Enjoy.

Yeah, the effect of the three filters give some of the pics an almost dreamscape quality.
This one is just absolutely beautifull, as if that example of Russian
neoclassicism in architecture wasn't enough, the picture takes even
further. I bet that picture wouldn't look half as good it taken with a
modern camera, the colours would be different, the clouds wouldn't look
the same (they look almost painted in that one) and such.
I use a scaled down version of that pic as a wallpaper on my mobile phone.

Didn't Russian neo-classicism draw from Eastern Roman and Kievian roots?
Anyways, its the Monestry of Saint Nil, located on an island in Lake
Seliger, North West of Moscow. Its still there, though damaged and
neglected during the Soviet era.

Very nice pictures indeed. I liked the ones with people too. You are right about the effect of the filters. It looks like it's painted in super-realist style. Very cool. Thanks Cywr.
