Although many outside of the Balkans are unaware of this, the capital of Montenegro was only changed to Podgorica in 1946. This was because the site of its historical capital, on a narrow plain, did not allow for further development or expansion.

Cetinje is one of the most historic cities in the Balkans. It has always remained the home of Montenegro's royal family and the cultural capital of the Montenegrin people.

It is built on the Karst plains and has a population of roughly 15,000.
