Topic: AE Picture of the Week - Archives Posted: 07-Nov-2005 at 02:45 |
Recently, I've added the "Picture of the Week" feature to the front
page. Each week a picture from history is selected. Past features will
be posted in this thread. Of course, the only way to see the current
pic of the week is by visiting the main site. ( www.allempires.com)
To 2/26/2006
The Amber Palace in
Jaipur, India is one of the highlights of architecture of the Mughal
Period. Construction of the palace began in 1592 and took place over
two centuries.
12/31/05
The Battle of Verdun.
Lasting nearly the entire year of 1916, it was the longest battle of
the Great War. A quarter million men fell from the German and French
armies as the fighting raged between trenches and forts.
11/27/05
Angkor Wat
is captured here between the calm blue sky and the peaceful green
grass. Built for king Suryavarman II of Khmer in the early 12th century
the temple stands as the icon of Khmer architecture and one of the most
captivating sites in modern Cambodia. (Photo by M. Beland, Photo.net)
Twantinsuyu, known as the Inca
Empire, ruled in the Andes mountains in South America from 1438 to 1533
AD. Perhaps its most famous symbol is Manchu Picchu,
"lost city of the Incas." Located in Peru, few sites invoke such a
facination of an ancient world amidst a natural scene of grandeur.

"A City of Cathay" is the name of this 18th
century painting depicting daily life in the splendid capital of the
Song Dynasty, which established rule over China in 960 AD as one of the
most advanced empires of its time. In its capital city of Bianliang (modern-day Kaifeng), springtime resides with the city's imperial glory.
Week Ending 11.5.05
( See Enlarged Version)
Seen here is Palmyra, city of palm trees, the ancient city that flourished at the crossroads between
Persia and Rome. It once stood as a great trade city in Syria. Under
its famed queen Zenobia, the city rose against Rome until it was
vanquished by Aurelian. Its ruins still stand proud.

I took a week off due to the paralyzing nature of Thanksgiving break.
Thanks for posting photos. However, I think I can handle the task of picture-chosing. The next one will probably be an artifact.

Historical pictures of Religious Structues in Israel would be great too. Dome of the Rock; most famous Mosque in Israel. The Holy Wailing Wall of the Jewish Faith in Isreal. (As you can see, the Dome of the Rock is right behind it. Not the best place Tomb of the Virgin: Church of the Holy Sepluchere:
