Russia Eyes More Nuclear Power Station Contracts In Iran

Russia is keen to build more nuclear power stations in Iran as the administration of president-elect Mahmood Ahmadinejad plans six such stations, the head of Russia's Atomic Energy Agency was cited by ITAR-TASS as saying Tuesday.

"As soon as Iran announces the tender for offers to construct new nuclear reactors, we will participate," Alexander Rumyantsev, the Atomic Energy Agency's director said.

"Tehran plans to construct six other reactors" in addition to the Bushehr station that Russia is close to completing, Rumyantsev said.

The comments come after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia was willing to continue cooperating with Iran over atomic energy following Ahmadinejad's election win at the weekend, "while taking into account our international obligations in the area of non-proliferation."

Officials last week said that the first deliveries of Russian nuclear fuel should be made to the Bushehr power station within a few months.

In an attempt to allay US and EU concerns that the civilian power station is part of a secret weapons development programme, Moscow and Tehran brokered a deal earlier in which Iran must send spent fuel back to Russia.
