Hi everyone.

The need has promoted an unlikely combination during WW2, a small plane and a heavyweight bomb. We are talking of dH Mosquito and blockbuster bombs used by the Royal Air Force. The link below provides an interesting collection of photos, some of which I had never seen before, this unusual combination. It is worth visiting and I hope you enjoy.

Good pix there P-14, of what looks to be a WW2 version of the 'barrel bomb'..

Other 'small' aircraft could tote large bombs, viz: Ju 87 Stuka,
but the D-H Mosquito was fast enough to make interception difficult..
..& survival of its crew more likely..

Even more interesting when you consider that the Mosquito was 80% wood.

The UK had a huge furniture industry. They figured out how to put it to good use.

Wood, yeah, but not whittled out of a log like a dug-out canoe..

More like a modern aircraft built from bonded composite, but using wood rather than synthetic/plastic fibre construction.

That smooth form/finish did contribute to the Mosquito being fast though, & showed that festooning bombers with gun turrets was folly..
