Unusually, the Integralist movement founded by Plinio Salgado in 1932 admitted blacks as well as whites. However, their enemy was the same: the Jews and the Left. As in Germany, there were brawls between Fascists and Communists in the streets of the big cities. The Fascists tried to seize power from the dictator Vargas in 1938, but 20 were killed in gunfights with the army and police. However, many surviving fascists were involved with the military dictatorships in the 1960s: Salgado joined the ARENA party and Rademaker and Melo ruled Brazil as part of the junta in 1969
