It might have been smarter to arm the militias and give them free rein to fight the Taliban while making the best use of their local knowledge.

Yepper ole son that is essentially what the CIA did when they supported them and the Taliban versus the Communist Russians. It worked extremely well. Kept it there Kept it theirs etc..etc... Never doubt Nick that it was not surfaced by the Gin-gins and O/I staffs. GW chose the Rumsfeld-Cheney alternative of direct action while attempting closet nation building that had not succeeded in the region previously....during any period of recorded history. In any noticeable secular fashion. Islam's supremacy as a unifier is the sole example of where an authority has been successful and that also is only partial as national and ethnic conflict still exists even in and with Islam.

My prognostications then.... have partially been vindicated now... and chief among them was that US populace based sheeple mentality then and  now would not support extended operations or a presence there. Even with a NATO involvement that really meant a majority US forces and treasure. The 'War on terror' while totally legit was never 'sold' correctly. PCness and liberal-leftist appeasement rejectionists coupled with anti-semitism inherent in the feigned intellectual elitists found with the aforementioned....would not allow for the real identification of the conflict.

And that was a 'War on Islamic fundamentalist terrorists and their support states.'

The focus then and now should have been on the latter of the above..with no latter attempted tie-in agendas or hidden caveats to avoid the sensitivities of the perps....be that for eco-social-cultural etc reasons.

The Generals and Admirals knew this but they were told to eat the rationales and then voice their support for the same....then and now. They had no choice then they still don't.
