Topic: Castle Hill rebellion Posted: 24-Feb-2012 at 19:44 |
After years of brutal treatment, 400 convicts in Australia took up arms in 1804. Many had fought in the 1798 Irish rebellion, including their leader Philip Cunningham. Initially armed with improvised spears, the convicts seized muskets, powder and shot and faced a British force of 50 men at the Second Battle of Vinegar Hill. Despite numerical superiority, the prisoners were no match for the well-trained British and were quickly recaptured. Nine of the ringleaders, including Cunningham, were publicly hanged as a deterrent, and many others were flogged, held in irons, or put into chain gangs

15 convicts were killed in the battle, but the casualties could have been much worse had the British commander not ordered his troops to show restraint. He wanted them taken in alive so they could be hung

It doesn't sound much of a battle, more crowd control.

I'm guessing Cunningham wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. I'll leave you with one thought, logistics.

I leave you with another...tactics. After the Redcoats fire ...Fire one volley in return and charge. Their superior numbers should have overwhelmed even 50 stalwarts. But the motivation, morale and courage of a convict, recently escaped from the horrors of 19th ce. prison life, even those formerly in the Rebellion, might have waned.

The convicts were also probably drunk as, in addition to the weapons, they seized large quantities of alcohol
